Further Description
  • Runner-up in the Cheshire Life "Dining Pub of the Year, 2000-2001" and a constant presence in the Good Pub Guide for the last 7 years, The Calveley Arms has become one of the region's most popular eating places. It stands in the pleasant village of Handley, just off the A41 that links Chester and Whitchurch, only a 10-minute drive from Chester. First licensed in 1638 and still retaining all its historic charm, the inn's smart black and white frontage promises much and the interior is as traditional as could be with a mass of wall and ceiling timbers,  and a collection of jugs and pots, pictures, prints and ornaments. It all provides an atmospheric setting in which to enjoy the outstanding cooking prepared by speciality Chefs under the supervision of the owners. The food is a mega-attraction here, served every lunchtime and evening, and the 70covers are soon taken so booking is always a good idea ( 01829 770619). The daily-changing specials menu  supplements a printed menu of unusual range and interest with fresh fish dishes something of a speciality of the house being fresh Lobster. Typical items on the main menu include hot Avocado and Stilton (one of the best-selling dishes),  tarte flambée like they make it in Alsace, Madras-style curry, and when in season local Pheasant, Venison and all time favourite Lamb Cutlets. The Calveley 16oz T Bone Steak, succulent Rib Eyes and Sirloins, Breton chicken grilled chicken breast with a sauce of bacon, mushrooms and Cheddar cheese,  with cream. Sandwiches, baguettes and special salads are among the lighter options. To finish with a visit to The Sweets Board is a must and the selection is to "Die For" Business clients can phone, fax or email  their lunch order in advance and speedy service is guaranteed. Four real ales Decaurs Caledonia and three guest brews ( which constantly change for variety) are popular orders at the bar and can be enjoyed in front of the open fire(weather permitting), also Leffe which compliments the food and deserts along with other very good recommended Belgian Beers. In fine weather, customers can enjoy their pint while watching or playing a game of Boules in the rustic beer garden at the rear of the inn.  Much use is made of the Marquee in the Garden for Alfresco dining . Barbecues also take place here and also occasional al fresco music. Happy hour is 6-7pm, Monday to Friday, and on Sunday night a fun quiz begins at 9pm  The Sunday Night Quiz has recently been featured on BBC Radio 4 . Mastercard, Visa, American Express and all other major credit cards  are welcome, and The Calveley has its own car park. You can even land a helicopter by prior permission. Among the attractions in the vicinity are two famous castles: Beeston, built in the 13th century and partially destroyed by Cromwell; and 19th century Cholmondeley, a mock-medieval construction in a 30-acre garden.
