Further Description
  • Chesters Walled Garden has a very special atmosphere. Set in the wild landscape of Hadrian's Wall, it is a haven of peace and beauty. The relaxed style of gardening gives a freedom to the planting that is exuberant and informal. Seen often on television and in books, it is a garden that many people love for its colour and scent. With one of the largest collections of herbs in Britain, Chesters Walled Garden is home to the National Collections of Thyme, Marjoram and Burnet. There are medicinal and dye plants, culinary and aromatic herbs, knot gardens and blowsy old fashioned roses. The famous Thyme Bank is a Persian carpet of colour in summer whilst the Roman Herb Garden shows the herbs grown during the Roman occupation of Britain. The flower-filled borders last well into autumn with grasses, seed heads and rosehips. Run organically, the garden attracts a great diversity of wildlife (68 species of birds recorded) and red squirrels can sometimes be seen in the surrounding woodland.A regular blog keeps people in touch with what is happening in the garden - thewalledgardenblog.blogspot.com
