Avon Tyrrell House and the surrounding estate were the former home of Lord Manners. The property was designed by the 'Arts and Crafts' architect W.R.Lethaby in 1891, and built from money the then Lord Manners won from training and riding the winner of the 1882 Grand National Horse race. It is a calendar house with 365 windows (days per year), 52 rooms (weeks per year), 12 chimneys (months per year), 7 outer doors (days per week) and 4 wings (seasons). The house is now Grade 1 and the grounds are Grade 2 listed with English Heritage. The Manners family lived here until WW2 when the property was requistioned initially by the British army, and latterly by the Americans who used it as an intelligence gathering station. After the war, the family gave over the property to the charity for the 'Youth of the Nation' to be used for holidays, courses, training and activities. We're still doing the same 60 years later and over a million people have now benefited from programmes and activities at Avon Tyrrell.
