Further Description
Patient and Public Involvement ForumsMake your opinion on your health services known! What are the Forums?Patient and Public Involvement Forums are made up of members of the public who have volunteered to help every patient and member of the public to get involved in identifying the strong and weak points within their local health services. The aim is for service users’ opinions to be a key factor in identifying areas requiring improvement as well as areas of well provided services within the NHS.What do the Forums do?The Forums aim to enable all sections of the community, under-represented groups such as ethnic minorities, to make their opinions on their NHS services heard. The Forums’ remit does not include complaints handling however if any member of the public does have a complaint and is not sure who to speak to then the Forums can advise them of the best actions to take and who to contact. The Forums deal with issues specific to the trust that they monitor. An issue is something that has been experienced, independently, by several members of the public rather than an isolated incident which may constitute a complaint. At present the Forums all meet about once a month. Some of these meetings are informal whereas others are meetings in public to which anyone may come along to observe the proceedings. A meeting in public is legally required whenever the Forums want to decide on a work programme, agree an annual report, present conclusions or refer a matter to another body (e.g. the Overview & Scrutiny Committee). The Forums are backed by statutory law and in that respect they have the powers they need to perform their duties (for more information please contact the address shown overleaf). Background information The Patient and Public Involvement Forum project is being run nationally by a non-departmental (independent) government body called The Commission for Patient and Public Involvement in Health (www.cppih.org) and officially replaced Community Health Councils on December 1st 2003.There is a Patient and Public Involvement Forum independently monitoring services provided by each NHS trust in the country and deal with GP’s, Dentists, Pharmacies & NHS Opticians etc.For further information, please con tact the Forum Support Office on 01623 827983/984.
