Further Description
  • Summer 2006 edition and Updated StoriesCountdown to Opening for New Civic Development Elloughton-cum-Brough's new £1.4 million library, customer service centre and community centre opens its doors to the public from 1 August 2006.  Nine "multi-purpose team" member posts have been created to run the East Riding Council library and customer service centre, which will have two late night openings on Tuesday and Thursday until 8pm. At other times, it will be 9-5, and 9-12 on Saturdays.   New technology at the Centurion Way centre will allow customers to request, issue and renew items library books and media themselves. The library, which will have a book stock of 25,000 and 15 public access PCs, is the first in the East Riding to have the system. The building includes a customer service centre, where residents will be able to make enquiries, gain information, advice and assistance on all council and partner services, as well as pay all council bills.     It will also include a community centre, run by the parish council, which will feature meeting rooms, a large hall and office space, all suitable for a range of community-based activities, such as slimming clubs, dance classes and the Citizens Advice Bureau. The centre is being managed by a group of trustees. East Riding Council Leader Stephen Parnaby said: "This is a long-awaited move, providing Brough with the civic facilities it needs. It's also ground-breaking by combining a library and customer service centre. It presents a challenge for the new team here and I hope residents will use it." Philip Clark, Chairman of the Community Centre Trustees, said: "We've had a tremendous start with advance bookings. The Centre will complement existing venues in the village and we'd welcome anyone to come down and take a look round." There will be an open day at the community centre on Sunday 3 September and an official opening of the entire complex is expected to take place in September. BROUGH WITNESSES A FIRST IN HEALTH CARE The new Chairman of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Nick Varey has hailed the development of a new building in Brough which brings together primary health care and ambulance services for the first time. The £1.6 million two-storey structure on Welton Road will open in late November. As well as replacing the old ambulance station, it will provide modern premises for physiotherapy, podiatry and office accommodation for health visitors, district nurses, school nurses, midwives and the community & voluntary sector. This replaces Brough Resource Centre. Mr Varey, who was joined by his wife Helen, the Chair of the East Yorkshire Primary Care Trust at a ceremony to launch building work, said: "The Government wants ambulance services to work more closely with the PCTs and for more ambulance care to be delivered in the community."Helen Varey added: "Facilities are available in close proximity to GPs and local authority services for modern clinical health care for Brough."BMX HAVEN UNDER THREAT  An unofficial secluded BMX track on the edge of Elloughton which attracts users from as far afield as Leeds and Lincolnshire looks likely to be dismantled.East Riding Council officials say that although the land, bounded by the A63 Welton Interchange, has been used in this way for 12 years, there are road safety, trespass & damage, and liability issues,  should there be an accident. The Highways Agency, Police, Welton Parish and East Riding  Councils met on site in May to consider the options, including a commitment to try to find alternative locations. Police and councillors agreed that while it is a dangerous location, it is also away from residential areas. Proximity to homes proved a stumbling block when a skate park was being considered in Brough in 2004. East Riding Cllr Julie Abraham says:  “There is the possibility of a
