Further Description
  •             Woad-inc is the trading name of Ian Howard, a farmer whose family have farmed in Beetley for nearly a century, and who has now diversified into indigo pigment production from woad.  He, and his wife, Bernadette, grow the plant, produce the pigment and piece-dye items with their pigment, or commission products to be made with their woad dyed yarn.Throughout history, indigo has been the main natural blue dye and woad was its source in Europe.  Woad has been grown in Britain since the Stone Age and has a long association with East Anglia, notably with Boudicca and the Iceni tribe who used it to colour their faces before going into battle.   Following a year long conversion programme to a traditional brick and flint cattle barn, Ian and Bernadette now have a  range of naturally dyed products on show there as well as an exhibition on the pigment production process. Woad Barn is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 10am - 4pm.Currently available by mail order  and on their website www.woad-inc.co.uk are:Seed, Pigment, Bamboo/cotton towels, Throws in various natural materials, Cushions, Rugs, Table runners, Candles, Hats, Bags, Scarves, Shawls, Jumpers, Knitted jackets, Angel tops AND MOREPlease visit. Directions to Woad Barn Follow brown signs to Gressenhall Museum on the B1146 (Dereham to Fakenham road).  At entrance to the museum, continue along to Fakenham for 1.5 miles when you will find sign on the left for Rawhall Lane.  Woad Barn is half a mile along Rawhall Lane. From Fakenham direction, take first turn on right after Bilney Garage.  Rawhall Lane, Beetley, Dereham, NR20 4HH Tel 01362 860218
