  • The Origin of the Well Creek TrustAfter a Public Inquiry in September 1969 Norfolk County Council stated that the Well Creek must not be closed. The Well Creek Trust was formed on 23rd March 1970.A Little Local HistoryThe Well Creek is an 8 mile length of waterway stretching from Salters Lode Lock to Marmont Priory Lock. The creek passes through the villages of Upwell, Outwell and Nordelph. Upwell and Outwell are more than a thousand years old. They originally formed a single village called by the Anglo-Saxon name of Wella, and in the year 970 AD were mentioned in the charter by King Edgar when he gave to Ely Abby 10,000 ells annually which he had accrued to the King in place of Military Service within the Isle (of Ely) from the people at Wella together with the 4th penny of public penalties paid at Grantanbridge.
