Further Description
  • Sticker Village AssociationThe village association is a registered charity run by a voluntary committee and its object is to provide or assist in providing facilities for recreation and other leisure-time occupation in the interests of social welfare and improving the conditions of life for the inhabitants of the parish of St. Mewan. The village hall is owned by the association, with the parish council being the custodian trustee.   Apart from functions organised by the association, the hall is available to outside organisations, groups, clubs, educational establishments, private individuals (for parties) etc. at  competitive rates.   Apart from the main hall, there is a stage with lighting, changing room, meeting room, kitchen, ladies and gents toilets and disabled access and toilet facilities.   The hall is centrally heated and is licensed to hold 140 people in total. There are two playing fields in the village - one owned by the association and one managed by the association for the parish council.Sticker Playing Fields                           In May 2005, The Association was presented a certificate by The Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, commemorating its nomination for The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.          Fund RaisingAs a charity, The Association obtains its income from hiring the hall, staging fund raising  events in the hall - such as Carn to Cove plays and film shows and raffles.   The major fund raiser is the annual Carnival Week with a fete, auction, queen of queens, quiz and similar events.   Local groups such as Scouts, WI, Village Players, Happy Circle, Football Club etc., stage their own events within the week (Summer Show, Bingo, Barn Dance etc.) to raise money for their own causes and then give  donations to The Association.   Help with ideas and/or  organising the week is always welcomed.   Annual grants towards maintaining the hall and playing field are received from the parish council.Sticker Carnival Week 2005 Sticker Carnival Week 2006                Recent Major ProjectsThe association, with the help of g rants from Restormel District Council and residents of Retanning Lane, had the lane to the hall resurfaced in 2005 to enable easier access - particularly for disabled and elderly hall vi sitors.Disabled toilet facilities were also installe d in the hall in 2005.  The total cost for these two projects being over £13KPrior to Retanning Lane being resurfaced the parish council investigated and arranged the repair of a major water leak that had been causing problems for several years.   The cost was ca. £2K and the parish council provided the funds for this work.Professional Entertainment in the villageIn an attempt to bring quality entertainment to Sticker residents the Village Association formed an association with Carn to Cove - an organisation dedicated to bringing various types of  professional entertainment to village hallsOver the last 3 years about 6 shows have been staged at the village hall - usually in the autumn.   During 2006 we presented The MsFits Theatre Company with their production of Secrets, Lies and DIY and O-Region's production of Laughing Gas - the latter playing to a full house with, regrettably, people having to be turned away.
