Further Description
I attended the public meeting in Harlton Village Hall last Friday 4th> November, along with Paul Rudkin, Jim Kimber, Jonathon Doyle, Paul> Stafford and a few other villagers from Haslingfield. The meeting> was well attended (standing room only by the start) and a number of> speakers had been invited to attend. I found the meeting very> interesting and informative and I have to say it was OVERWHELMINGLY> against the expansion. Obviously Harlton has slightly different> issues to our own, not least the huge road development they will have> to suffer if this goes ahead. There have been some rumours and> mutterings that Haslingfield will be better off if this goes ahead,> ie we will lose all the lorry traffic from Barton Road, the chimney> will be so high that the pollution will be dispersed over a wider> area, etc etc - but let's not kid ourselves. If this expansion goes> ahead on the mega-scale planned, the noise and the light pollution> from the plant itself 24/7, will make us wish for a return to the> lorry traffic - and does no one in Haslingfield use the A603 into> Barton? Can anyone imagine how hellish it will be to get out at the> junction with Haslingfield Road when there is one cement lorry every> minute. If the development does not go ahead, there will be no> lorries from 2010 onwards. And as for the taller chimney/less> pollution argument - lets not forget that production is increasing> from 500,000 kg to 3.5 million kg and no matter how tall the chimney> is, the pollution unfortunately is not going to go into orbit. It> will come back down and although on some days it may disperse away> from us, much of the time it may not - according to a chemicals> expert at the Harlton meeting the predicted dispersal of the> pollution (which will be computer modelled) is very much subject to> the vagaries of our weather, and can only be expected to be correct> 40 to 50% of the time. So do we get the pollution the other 50% of> the time?>> Also present was the District Councillor from Haslingfield, Liz> Heazell, and our own parish council chair Marjorie Richardson. I > know that> many of you have rung her to ask for a public meeting in Haslingfield> and that she has refused, saying that we have already had one five> months ago, even though the issue of the expansion of the cement> works was not really on anyone's radar at that time and nor were the> full facts known. Still, it's interesting to note that she has > enough time to> attend another village's meeting without feeling the need to let us> have a public meeting of our own. We have therefore decided to call> our own public meeting sometime very soon so that we can discuss> exactly what this expansion will mean for Haslingfield and the> surrounding area. We will let you know when we have got this> organised. We are trying to get hold of some experts to speak to help> focus the meeting. All the local parish councillors are meeting in> Barrington on Wednesday this week to present some sort of united view> from the villages - I hope that the councillors of Haslingfield will> oppose the expansion on our behalf even though we have not really> been fully consulted.>> In the meantime please write with your concerns to Sebastian> Kindersley who is the County Councillor for Haslingfield (and > attended the Harlton meeting)> (email:> sebastian.kindersley@cambridgeshire.gov.uk) and is opposed to the> expansion:>> Address: The Manor Barn, East Hatley, Gamlingay, Cambs, SG19 3JA>> Once the planning application is in the public domain - sometime> between now and Christmas, then write to Helen Vass at the Planning> Department of Cambs County Council at Shire Hall.>> It also came up at the Harlton meeting that the CPRE (the Council for> the Protection of Rural England) was also very much interested i
