WEST SURREY NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY Evening meetings - 8pm in Ripley Village Hall - September 2009 - April 2010 In Darwin's Footsteps - illustrated talk by Mike Read 24th September 2009 Charles Darwin visited not only the Galapagos Islands but also mainland Ecuador in 1835 and was amazed by the wealth of wildlife he encountered; there are over 1,500 species of birds. Mike Read is a professional photographer, writer, tour guide and lecturer. The first half of his talk shows some of the mainland's wonderful wildlife, while the second half shows a typical cruise around the Enchanted Isles. Hawk Moths - illustrated talk by member David Smith 22nd October 2009 David will show us some of these amazing moths. He will talk mainly about the British Hawk Moths, but will also show us some beautiful foreign ones. AGM followed by Photographic Quiz hosted by David Ross 26th November 2009 David's photographic quiz will be a mix of natural history, places and famous faces - with prizes! Calendar of 2009 in photos by David Ross with Mulled Wine and Mince pies 10th December 2009 A life in cold blood - illustrated talk by member Dianne Maxfield 28th January 2010 Dianne will talk about reptiles and the research work her husband, Tony Phelps, is doing in South Africa. She will concentrate on British adders and South African Dwarf adders. The Secret Lives of Garden birds - illustrated talk by Dominic Couzens 25th February 2010 Dominic has been a British-based freelance writer and birdwatching field trip leader since 1988 and many of you will have read his regular columns in BBC Wildlife, Bird Watching, The National Trust Magazine and Birds. He tends to give light-hearted talks based on the theme of bird behaviour. This talk will describe a year in the lives of garden birds, uncovering many
