  • EARLY ADSL ADOPTERSIn September 2002, the village ofTodmorden in West Yorkshire was the firstin the UK to register enough people topass their trigger level. In only ten weeks,200 people registered their interest inADSL. One of the key drivers in uptakewas a concerted community campaignbuilt around a website. Bruce Standford ofBT commented: “There is no doubt thatlocal campaigns have helped drivedemand.” www.todtalk.com/adsl.htmRESIDENTIAL ADSLOver a year ago, before BT had evenannounced trigger levels for the localexchange, Chris Meirick started a campaign to bring ADSL to the residentsof Stanstead Abbott in Hertfordshire. Partof the village had access to cable but for those that didn’t, ADSL looked to be the cheapest option. Chris spread the word with a website, leaflets and by getting in touch with local and national press, his MP and with BT. In April 2003, the trigger level was set at 250 and then reduced to 200 in June. With a one-man campaign, getting people to register took time, but the trigger level was reached in September 2003. Chris is looking forward to getting broadband in January 2004. "People have to take action to get broadband," he says. "If you just sit back, nothing is going to happen." In November2003, BT announced trigger levels for afurther 2300 exchanges. In 32 areas, broadband campaigns mean that these targets have already been reached and they will get ADSL straight away –proving the power of community action groups like Chris’s. www.pleasebt.co.u
