  • Blue Bell Gala- Our Moist (sic) Ambitious Yet. After weeks of planning and preparation the Blue Bell Village Gala went ahead over the  late May Bank Holiday weekend and was a great opportunity for the whole village to get together and the perfect excuse to spend 3 days at the Pub.Alex, Cinzia, and many village organisations worked together to stage the most ambitious and elaborate 3 days of entertainment and community activity we have seen for many years. Saturday was a family day, with a focus on Children’s’ activities- a Fancy Dress Competition, Bouncy Castle, Entertainer, Stalls, Sideshows and Music. The weather stayed fine, the first of 2 Hogs was roasted, and a great time was had by all. Sunday and Monday were severely rain and wind affected, but despite the partial collapse of the marquee, and the sacrifice of several gazebos, the show went on. Stalls had to be relocated to the marquee, and the inter-organisation tournament had to be hastily redesigned as an indoor event, which despite the cramped conditions (or maybe because of them) was a great success with keenly fought silly games keeping the shivering crowd entertained. The eventual winners were the “Church Team” (aka the “God Squad”), who beat the School PTFA by shrewdly playing their joker on the shove ha’penny. The Horticultural Society shrank away in last place and immediately commenced the bitter recriminations over management and team selection. Bob Bates swapped from Ice Cream salesman (stop me and bless one?) to his more conventional role and held an enjoyable family service in the pub for Pentecost, after which the beer began to flow and the wind and rain really set in. The Auction and Pub Quiz had to be relocated from the marquee as well, and although numbers were down, both events were a great success. Thanks must go to the many sponsors and those who donated auction items, and to Mr Johnson from Collyweston who so expertly drove prices as far as he could among the limited number of generous bidders. Later, heads were scratched as John Tilley ran a fiendish Pub Quiz, and many of us wobbled home late-damp but entertained- while the storm raged on.Monday was a major musical event for the village- 3 fine bands lined up to play all afternoon. The quality of the music was remarkable, and the tightly packed crowd in the Bell rocked away the afternoon with the brilliant but slightly deranged Houndogs providing their usual high energy entertainment.  At the end of the weekend, thanks to the auction, quiz, and a donation from Bowmans, the “central pot” had accumulated nearly £960 to be divided among the 7organisations taking part in the tournament; All Saints Church, Village Hall, WI, Horticultural Society, Eagles FC, Easton Garford PTFA, and the Pre-School Group. These organisations also raised a total of £1,418 from their own stalls and entertainments, so in all, despite the weather we raised nearly £2,500 for the village and had a great time. Thanks go to all who took part and braved the weather, but especially to Alex, Cinzia and their staff who battled on with cheery Italian stoicism throughout. As numbers were down due to weather, there’s some beer (and ice cream) left over- we should all do our bit to finish them off in the coming weeks. Tim Nicol.   The Digital Scoreboard for the Tournament Blue Bell Gala- Our Moist (sic) Ambitious Yet.
