Further Description
  • QUARRY ACTION GROUP Towards the end of May, local people became aware that Alfred McAlpine PLC were intending to dispose of the ‘Marford Quarry’ by the end of 2006. The name is rather misleading for locals - Marford Quarry locally is the North Wales Wildlife Trust Quarry. The quarry referred to by McAlpines runs alongside the railway, behind Pant Lane, and many locals know it as Pant Quarry.IMAGE and Gresford Community Council were contacted for support, and IMAGE is fronting the newly formed ‘Quarry Action Group’, open to anyone, which is taking steps to buy the quarry for use by the local community.Questionnaires are available at the Post Office for people to give their views on how they would like to see the quarry used. So far, many people seem in favour of using the land for walking, to preserve and improve the wildlife habitat, to protect and encourage the flora and fauna. The needs of cyclists should be considered, and involvement of young people in the project is vital. If you have any views, please complete one of the forms from the Post Office, or email Sue Kelly as below.Three meetings have been held over the last month, minutes of which are displayed in the Post Office, Library, Community Centres, Churches, Youth Club and Surgery. A value for the land has been discussed with the agent representing McAlpines, and currently funding is being researched pending agreement with the Company Secretary and Board that they are willing to proceed with a sale to the Quarry Action Group. At a forthcoming meeting, date to be announced, a formal committee will have to be set up, with a constitution, and a bank account – all requirements to accompany any funding application. Also a new name will need to be found for the quarry, to distinguish it from the NWWT quarry. Please let us know your views, and remember that all are welcome to Action Group meetings. Sue Kelly, quarrykelly@hotmail.co.ukTel. 01978 854469
