Further Description
Road SafetyMinutes from Meeting 02/10/03PC Harris said that the main problems he has to deal with are speeding and parking, and that parking near schools will always be a problem. His main aim is to protect the children and he will do whatever he can to help.A one way system was suggested for dropping children off to school. This would mean traffic coming in to Langley road from the corner shop, dropping off at the school then leaving via Church Road/Langley Road past the Church. To accompany this idea it was suggested that children could where badges saying 'I Went One Way'.It was requested that PC Harris issues tickets to those who have parked illegally on the 'ZIG ZAGS'. It was also suggested that we could report people who continuously parked illegally to PC Harris. One suggestion was that parents that saw people parked in these areas could place a warning notice on their windscreen. This is to start now and you will have some of these sheets attached please feel free to photocopy as many as you like.Mrs Pilling talked about the staff parking and it was suggested that the staff should have parking exemption cards to display in their cars. She explained that some of the visiting teachers have to be able to park near to the school in order to keep to their time-tables. Gill Evans said that she felt the traffic problem was worst in the afternoon due to parents stopping to chat after pick-up time.It was suggested that a 20 mph speed limit could be in operation around the school at busy periods. This idea has been used to good effect in other villages and we will look into this in more detail.Concern was expressed about the number of buses using Langley Road causing further congestion and Nigel Goodrich who is on the Parish Council said that he would approach Johnson's Buses to see if an alternative route could be found.Colin Reed expressed a strong concern about people mounting the curb to turn around and also people continuing to drive along the pavement until they find a space. Colin said that his son was recently knocked of his bike by a car reversing and feels that it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt. The one way system would help this as people would only be parking on one side of the road, probably the side with the grass verge on therefore there would be no need to park on or turn on the curb. This can only be brought into action voluntarily therefore we would like to appeal to all drivers and ask if they could possibly think about co-operating with the one way system and parking on one side of the road to cut down on the congestion. One of the ideas is to have a walking bus. This scheme has been highly successful in other areas. There is a notice board with lots of information about walking buses on and it will remain around the school for a few weeks for all to have a look at.The route was discussed and it would mean people parking at the Church Centre and the children walking down St Michaels Road crossing at the bottom of Langley Road just before the row of trees start. (There is a widened path there), continuing along the path into school. It was suggested that the bus leaves at 8.30am to allow the children to arrive at school at 8.45am. This time was not popular with some people but it would mean that when the bus crosses Langley Road the school traffic has not started and it also gives the younger children who do not walk so fast time to reach school. There will be full training for the leaders on the walking bus by Warwickshire County Council who will also come and asses the route for safety and will also advise if official crossing are needed.PC Harris was concerned about the pressure put on the Church Centre car park. The idea for the walking bus traffic is not to park directly outside the Church Centre and this area will be cordoned off to allow the children to gather safely. This will mean when the bus leaves, the spaces outside the Church Centre will be available for Steppin
