Further Description
  • Are you a keen gardener? Do you care for the environment? Do you have a little time to spare? Then become a Master Composter!Master Composter programmes were established over 10 years ago in the USA and Canada. These programmes have proved to be extremely popular and successful in promoting the benefits of home composting. There are now also a number of schemes established in the UK.The Cambridgeshire programme was established in 2001. It is currently the largest scheme of its kind in the UK, with 110 volunteers having received 2 days training in composting. Nearly 1300 hours of promotional activities have been carried out so far. These activities include giving talks/ demonstrations to community groups and school children, assisting friends and neighbours to set up their own compost heaps, putting up displays at garden centres, village fetes and other events, and writing articles for local publications. Volunteers have been able to choose activities that they feel comfortable with at times that are convenient to them. This year we are looking to train 75 more Cambridgeshire residents as Master Composters to further promote the composting cause! As a volunteer you will receive training in home composting and related environmental issues (provided by HDRA), a Master Composter resource pack and several day trips, including visits to a composting site and one of HDRA?s organic gardens. All training expenses will be paid for; you only need to provide your time. Once the training has been completed, you will be expected to spend 30 hours over the following year promoting home composting. These activities will be tailored to your individual skills.Upon completion of the training and 30 volunteer hours you will be awarded the title Master Composter and be invited to receive your certificate at an award ceremony.Any Cambridgeshire resident over the age of 18 can apply. You do not need to have any voluntary work or composting experience.
