Further Description
  • FROSTENDEN became part of a Group Parish Council in 1971 when it was linked with the neighbouring parishes of Uggeshall and South Cove. These two had previously only had parish meetings. Each parish still has an annual parish meeting, but the Group Parish Council meets quarterly.FROSTENDEN is split by the A12 with the majority of the housing being on the east side of the road. There are no shops. The population is about 200.There were two former brickworks which ceased operations pre-WW2.The village has the distinction of being the only 'portus maris'(inland harbour) in the Domesday Survey along this coast. There is a village hall shared with South Cove and it is available for hire. There is also a playing field adjacent of almost 4 acres. The round tower of the church of All Saints pre-dates the church building of c.1220 and c.1420 when the south aisle was added.Services are held every Sunday, the 1st and 3rd Sundays at 9.30 a.m. and the 2nd & 4th at 11 a.m. All are Book of Common Prayer services.SOUTH COVE is a small hamlet of less than 30 people. There is a noted brickworks, still operational and also a Public House, the "Five Bells".The attractive church of St.Lawrence is thatched and has undergone an extensive restoration. It is noted for its 9 day flower festival at the end of July/early August each year. The church is attractively floodlit. The service at 3 p.m. monthly on the 3rd Sunday is also BCP.UGGESHALL has a population of about 130. It has a Church Hall, formerly the village school where, each year (August) their Country Teas attract visitors from a wide area for church fund-raising.The church dedicated to St.Mary,,is thatched and is entered via a 20th C lych gate. The church tower collapsed in the 18th C and there is now a clapboard belfry. To celebrate the Millennium an attractive stained glass roundel has been inserted in a window on the south side. Services are BCP with an 8 a.m. HC on the first Sunday of the month and Evensong at 6 p.m. every Sunday. The village 'suffers' from being frequently mis-spelt by an additional "L" inserted after the double "G".The three churches in Frostenden, Uggeshall and South Cove are all within the Sole Bay Team Ministry which covers 12 parishes including the town of Southwold. They are all in the Halesworth Deanery and the Diocese of St.Edmundsbury and Ipswich. The Local Government area is Waveney District within Suffolk County Council and the parliamentary constituency is Suffolk Coastal.
