Further Description
  • C.A.I.RCornwall Against Mass Incineration of Refuse (CAIR) is a voluntary action group that has been formed to campaign against Cornwall County Council's proposal to site an Energy from Waste plant in Mid-Cornwall, for the mass incineration of approximately 60% of the municipal solid waste stream as well as a proportion of the commercial and industrial waste stream. The proposed incinerator could be a building of 40m(130ft) at its highest point, 50m(160ft) wide and 100m(325ft) long with a chimney of over 75m(244ft), essential for dispersing the dangerous toxic emissions across Cornwall. (Bodmin Beacon is 44m\144ft high)Why oppose Incineration? It produces emissions of particulates, heavy metals and dioxins, all of which are potentially dangerous to humans, animals and all flora and fauna. It undermines councils' schemes by demanding long-term waste delivery. Because it takes 15-25 years for a waste management company to make a return on their capital investment, the contract between a council and a waste management company requires the council to provide an agreed amount of waste for at least 25 years. It produces toxic ash, which still has to be land filled. It destroys valuable resources. The Department for Trade and Industry for England and Wales summarizes the numbers of breaches of emission limits to the air from Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators from 1996 to 2000. There have been breaches on 899 occasions where Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators have been found to be operating in breach of their conditions. The emissions are going to fall all over Cornwall. St Austell and Par when the north wind blows. Truro and Falmouth when the east wind blows. Newquay and Padstow when the south wind blows. Bodmin and beyond when the west wind blows.CAIR accept that the county has a waste problem to solve but we believe there are alternatives to incineration,Reduce less packaging.Re-use boxes, bags and bottles.Recycle newspaper, cardboard, cans, bottles and much more.Compost kitchen and garden waste.Anaerobic digestion industrial bacteria eat organic waste.IRP Integrated Recycling Plants.SWERF Solid Waste and Energy Recycling Facility. You don't need to be part of a group to do something. Pick up the phone right now and call your local County Councillor and MP. They need to know that no one wants this incinerator to be built. Write to the newspapers and phone the call-in shows on the radio or if you want to do more get in contact with C.A.I.R, where can you do the most to stop Cornwall being destroyed! If you would like more information contact:C.A.I.R.
