Further Description
  • THE DOWNLAND ART SOCIETYPatron:                Lady Sarah CluttonPresident:            Christopher Bakerbsite:              www.downland.orgContact:              Mike Rome, Membership Secretary                           Tel: 01903 526703                           Email: mike@mikerome.co.ukThe Downland was formed in 1944 and is one of the longest established and largest art societies in West Sussex. However, being one of the oldest doesn’t mean it lives in the past, as it is one of the few art societies in West Sussex to have its own website, and in addition, is probably the only one where the members benefit from demonstrations enhanced by digitally projected images on screen and audio presentations, ensuring even those at the back of the room can see and hear what is going on at the front. We currently have over a hundred members, many of who exhibit regularly. An artist can join as an Associate Member or Full Member and the annual fees are £16.00 and £18.00 respectively. Associate Membership is suitable for those who have an interest in art, but do not feel comfortable with exhibiting their work. Full Membership is attained by satisfactory evaluation of three framed pieces of work and enables the artist to enter the maximum number of pieces at exhibitions.Summary of activitiesMeetings: These are held at the Walberton Village Sports Pavilion on the first Saturday of each month (except August) and demonstrations by professional artists take place between 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm. Non-members are welcome at these meetings (a fee of £2.50 is payable on the day).Workshops: There are three workshops each year for those members wishing to participate and these are held on Wednesdays from 10.00 am until 3.00 pm (15 April, 13 May and 15 July 2009).Exhibitions: We have two very popular exhibitions each year in Arundel and high sales figures are always achieved. The exhibitions provide a marketing opportunity for members helping them to gain valuable exposure of their work. The Society will be part of the Arundel Gallery Trail in its second exhibition of 2009.
