  • WISHAW WI Please come along and visit us or contact us at lstubbings@waitrose.com.We meet on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7.30 pm at Wishaw Cricket Club, Church Lane, Wishaw.  We are a friendly group and cover a wide age range.  Visitors are always welcome.  Wishaw WI was founded in July 1923 and currently has 28 members, 11 of whom make up our committee.  Our monthly meetings consist of a speaker or demonstrator on a wide variety of subjects, plus an up-date of WI news.  Between meetings we arrange a programme of events such as walks, craft get-togethers, outings, coffee evenings, etc.  2008 was Wishaw's 85th Anniversary Year, so lots of extra activities were planned to celebrate this milestone in our history.  The WI is a national women's organisation well-known for its successful campaigning, and we are also affiliated to the Warwickshire County Federation, who organise a wide programme of events for its members.  The Corunna News is published monthly to keep members in Warwickshire up-to-date with news and events.  Each Spring Warwickshire have a Council Meeting usually held in Leamington Spa and tickets are available to all Warwickshire WI members.  Recent speakers have included Falklands War veteran Simon Weston, BBC newsreader George Alagiah, and author and MP Anne Widdecombe.Nationally the WI has around 205,000 members in England and Wales and once a year a National AGM is held where around 5,000 delegates meet to hear guest speakers and news about current campaigns and activities.  In 2008 the AGM was held in Liverpool, where speakers included Professor Averil MacDonald, Baroness Susan Greenfield and the comedian and journalist Sandi Toksvig.  A resolution was passed calling for action on the inappropriate imprisonment of the severely mentally ill.  This year's AGM will be held at the Albert Hall, London on 3rd June, when the speakers will include Maureen Lipman, Eve Pollard and Richard Stilgoe.  We will be debating a resolution calling for more research into the health of the honey bee.Along with two other local WIs - Coleshill and Curdworth - Wishaw makes up the Coleshill Group of WIs, who also offer outings and opportunities to get together two or three times a year.  The WI has its own adult education college - Denman College, near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, where members and friends can enjoy 2, 3 or 4 night courses in a huge range of subjects.  It also has a recently-opened WI Cookery School, where day and residential courses are held coverin all aspects of cookery.Wishaw WI is currently collecting members' recipes to publish a small book later in the year to raise money for funds.  We have a travelling bear - Teddy Travers  - who accompanies members on holidays and days out.  He has his photograph taken in all sorts of interesting places and each year we publish a calendar showing his exploits.  This is given free to members, but extra copies are available at a small charge. The subscription for 2009 is just £29 a year, and this includes all our monthly meetings plus a colour magazine, WI Life, eight times a year.
