Further Description
We serve a population of 5,364 of which there are 4,395 electors. Within the parish there are presently around 2,449 households but with new development planned for the area this figure will increase enormously. This is because Telford has been identified in the West Midlands Regional Planning Guidance as an area suitable for residential development. In fact, the estimated population growth in Telford and Wrekin from 1995 to 2006 was estimated to be 60%, which would create a substantial demand for additional housing. Much of this demand will be catered for in Lawley since it was earmarked for development and regeneration under Section 7(1) of the New Towns Act 1981 way back in 1987. Further information can be found by clicking the link on the left marked The Lawley Masterplan.THE ROLE OF THE PARISH COUNCILOur function is to serve local residents who live in the parish of Lawley & Overdale. We are a progressing local council made up of 8 councillors and the Clerk. We work as a team and our common aim is to serve our local community. Members of the public elect our councillors every four years and they work as a corporate body making decisions for the benefit of the community. The Clerk implements these decisions and provides independent, objective and professional advice, information and administrative support. We have the power to improve the quality of community life by spending money on things which, in our opinion, are in the interest of the parish or its inhabitants, and many kinds of activities are aided in this way.We hold monthly Parish Council Meetings normally on the first Tuesday of each month. Dates, times and venues of these meetings are advertised on several notice boards throughout the parish. Members of the public are most welcome to attend and speak to Members about any issues during the public session or just sit and listen. The Parish Council is controlled by Acts of Parliament, we can only do what we have been given a specific power to do by statute. Each year, we estimate the running costs of the council's activities and set a budget (the precept). Our precept for 2008/2009 is £130,000. All expenditure incurred by the council is properly recorded and audited each year. We keep our local community informed of our activities by publishing a quarterly newsletter which is distributed to each household within our parish.
