Further Description
  •  A group of Keele medical students are in the process of setting up a new community first responder (CFR) scheme on the university campus.  In conjunction with West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS), volunteers will respond to 999 calls in the community in advance of staff from the ambulance service.  The main aim is to provide life saving treatment such as defibrillation with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to patients suffering from cardiac arrest.  They will also attend a variety of other calls and provide vital treatments including the administration of oxygen.  All volunteers, who can be students, staff or local residents will be provided with some of the best training in the country from WMAS, and will be provided with a kit purchased with grants and money raised locally.  The scheme will join others locally and nationally, of which there are over 10,000 volunteers involved.  We also aim to site a Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) on the campus, such as those found in train stations and shopping centres, to help provide cover when volunteers are unable to.  During October – November 2008, 12 volunteers will under go training, joining 5 members who will already be qualified.  The scheme aims to be fully functional by the end of the calendar year, and will recruit and train more volunteers over the coming years.   If you are interested in finding out more, or indeed volunteering to help out then please do not hesitate to contact us via email: email@keelecfr.org.uk
