Further Description
  • At The Generation Journey we have a vision to integrate disadvantaged youth with wiser elders. Actually we’re inspired-inspired to mentor young people, so that they devise programmes that work with their Elders. The Generation Journey are dedicated to developing a deep lasting and mutual respect between generations in a fun, innovative and creative way, offering a unique vision and opportunity for our unguided young, and a rich and rewarding purpose in life for our elderly. Initially we are launching a series of workshops throughout Suffolk bringing together young people up to the age of 25 and older members of the community aged 55 and above. These will consist of; Introduction to the project; engagement and commitment to working together. Follow up workshops designed to explore rhythm, sound and harmonies led by qualified musicians/ music producers with the necessary skills to create harmony, encourage musical integration of the generations, to convey a message of life values through music and song. Formation of bands and groups (mixed ages) to perform at an annual Regional Music and Values Festival, leading up to a National Values Event in 2010.   The objective is to facilitate greater community participation by the encouragement of young and old joining together through common interests in music, thus breaking down the barriers between the two disparate generations. To provide opportunities to re-engage older members of the community and offer alternate activities for young people. To encourage good citizenship. To develop leadership skills in young people through older people acting as mentors to enable and empower them to drive the project forward. Development of team working. An improved understanding of life’s values and how they can be conveyed through music by combining youth and energy with experience, knowledge and wisdom. Development of self-expression and self-esteem. Improved music skills from instrument playing to interpretation. Creation of a mutual piece of musical work, which incorporates a range of music styles. In order to determine the need for a community initiative such as ours we have held discussions with organizations such as Connexions,  Schools, Youth clubs, Age Concern, The Ormiston Trust, Sheltered Housing Associations, Young People and Older members of the Community. We have received a very positive response and willingness to become involved. An initial trial held in the town of Newmarket proved to be well and enthusiastically attended. Added to this is the knowledge that there is a breakdown of values in society, and the project will improve the quality of life. Old and young working together side-by-side, sharing skills, knowledge and creativity, will deliver an increased level of mutual respect.   Enhanced communication will facilitate the forming of bonds and strengthening ties in the local community.   In essence added value and meaning to life, by bridging the void of lost respect and self esteem in families and communities.   In order to successfully launch a National Event we have been loaned the usage of a Dutch Clipper barge, which will embark on a circumnavigation of the UK, commencing in May 2008.
