  • VOLUNTEERING – DO SOMETHING AMAZING! For young people, volunteering has always conjured up images of working in dusty charity shops.  Those days are long gone thanks to Millennium Volunteers who aim to put the spark and excitement back into volunteering for thousands of young people across Britain.   Becky Germaine, who is the Millennium Volunteers Project Worker for EcoLocal, a local charity in the London Borough of Sutton says, “There are so many exciting new placement opportunities out there so we literally have something for everyone no matter what their interests or background!”  She is responsible for looking after volunteers aged 16-25 in or around Sutton who wish to get involved in volunteering with MV and is used to the misconceptions that young people have.  “When I go into colleges and schools I often find young people saying that they don’t have time to volunteer or that they don’t want to work in a charity shop and I have to explain that although there are some fantastic people who love working in the shops, in fact volunteering has changed a lot in the last few years.  Millennium Volunteers makes it possible for young people to not only get that “feel good” factor from volunteering but also have some incredible experiences, make loads of new friends and get free qualifications in their spare time!” Millennium Volunteers offers placements to young people with all sorts of interests from working in the police cadets, to learning computer skills and even helping as a teaching assistant in schools.  In fact a lot of the projects run by EcoLocal MV also offer free qualifications to their volunteers.  “Whether it’s something basic like a St Johns Ambulance First Aid Certificate or something more advanced like an AQA in Communications or Recycling then we can help.  Many of our volunteers come to us looking to improve their qualifications and end up improving their social life and their self confidence too!  It’s a fantastic way to make new friends and do something unique with your spare time.”    Daniel, a student from Carshalton College took part as a volunteer on EcoLocal’s Bike Street Project which shows young people how to do up and maintain old bicycles.  He learned wheel repair among many other things and, like all the Bike Street volunteers was offered the chance to do a free AQA qualification in Bike Maintenance.  Dominic, 17, volunteered at Sutton Shopmobility helping people with disabilities, and now has a paid job there in his spare time whilst he does A-levels.With our new MV “taster” sessions, young people can “test drive” different careers to find out if its something that will interest them which makes it especially useful for those having to make subject choices soon.  Work experience in particular careers is often very hard to find.  Becky says “We also have volunteers interested in popular careers and university courses like media and yet they are finding it almost impossible to build up practical hands on experience in the subject.  So far we have managed to place lots of young people in media related roles across the borough, from presenting their own radio shows at Youth FM, to filming and producing a DVD on “Green Travel” around the area.  It will give them all loads of new skills and make it a lot easier to find media work in the future.” Our hours are very flexible so we can work round school, college, work, kids, anything!  Whether you can offer us 1 hour or 200 we are happy to find you something incredible to do.   At the moment we are also encouraging local schools and colleges in the London Borough of Sutton to contact us about setting up their own “Youth Action” teams to tackle environmental issues.  Whether students want
