Further Description
North Belfast Employment Centre is a community organisation set up in May 1990 through funding by Central Government to address the high levels of unemployment in the North Belfast area. Initially an A.C.E. scheme, it evolved into a local Labour Market Intermediary (LMI) for the North Belfast area. Its’ main objective is to register unemployed clients living in the North Belfast area and to develop action plans that identify barriers to employment and corresponding actions to overcome these barriers for each individual client. It provides a confidential client focused service that is flexible and offers advice, support and mentoring, not only to assist clients into and sustaining employment, but for the clients where employment is not an option at this time. In January 2005, in partnership with Intercomm, North Belfast Employment Centre commenced a pilot Intermediary Labour Market (ILM) initiative, namely the Rebuilding Civic Society Programme funded by the Belfast Local Strategy Partnership. The programme has enabled eleven long term unemployed from the North Belfast area one year’s employment based in a local community and or business project. In October 2005, in partnership with the North Belfast Partnership Board we employed an employability consultant to deliver the Local Employment Access Partnership (LEAP). The aim of the LEAP programme is to increase employability and access to jobs for unemployed and economically inactive residents of North Belfast. We believe that we have been a positive force in the scheme of things in North Belfast, working against the backdrop of many years of civil disturbance and trying to assist as many people as possible into employment. It is simultaneously an achievement and strength that NBEC is recognised as a provider on a strong cross community basis. This has been demonstrated over the years through the make up of the Board, staffing and clientele. In September 2007 NBEC in partnership with A4e commenced the pilot Training for Success "Job Ready Programme". This programme is targeted towards 16-18 year olds to progress to higher level training, further education or employment by providing training to address personal and social development, essential skills training and employability skills
