Further Description
  • Nicholforest is one of the few remaining areas where red squirrels still survive but our red squirrels are in danger and we need you to help us protect them. The Red Squirrel is Britains only native squirrel and because through necessity Red Squirrels have been introduced elsewhere from Europe, our Red Squirrels are even more special because they are few of the remaining that are native to Britain. The Red Squirrel is seriously under threat. Over recent years the red squirrel colonies in the Nicolforest area have declined sharply. This is due to several factors: destruction of habitat, road kill and more recently the influx of grey squirrels into the area. Without local help the Nicholforest red squirrel will disappear. This is what you can do to help:Visit Nicholforest Village Hall where information leaflets are available on ‘Saving our Squirrels’Report sightings of Squirrels – both red and grey (please see 5 below). Our gardens and woodland are a Red Squirrel Sanctuary! If you have trees, especially pine trees, please don’t cut them down! Replacing felled trees with connivers will help our red squirrels.Feed our Red Squirrels – The most suitable foods for red squirrels are hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, beech (cob) nuts and pine nuts. Sweet chestnuts and walnuts are also suitable. Unsalted peanuts are a favourite too but should not be given in isolation. Some squirrels like oats. Applie, carrots, bone meal, a cuttle fish can provide additional calcium sources. If you do feed, please make sure that: grey squirrels are discouraged. These are the biggest threat to the continued existence of the Red Squirrel. You can help by reporting any sighting to us. 'Sighting Forms' are available in the village hall. Remember: grey squirrels can carry the deadly parpapox virus. Please drive carefully. Road kill can account for a number of red squirrel deaths.
