Further Description
  • The Shilbottle Skills Centre is a community led project, which took six years to plan.  The initial Business Plan was based on the recommendations of a study compiled by Leeds Metropolitan University in 1993 after the closure of the mines.  A financial package: Rechar2, Northumberland County Regeneration Fund, One North East, Northern Rock, the National Lottery Charities Board and Lloyds TSB Foundation made it possible to refurbish a derelict wing of the Working Men’s Club in the centre of the village, and provided revenue funding for the first three years.  The members of the Shilbottle Workingmen’s Club gifted a twenty-five year lease to the Centre to provide matched funding.  Refurbishment began in January 2000 and the Skills Centre opened in June 2000.  The Centre was officially opened by HRH the Princess Royal in December 2000. The Centre is part of the regeneration programme for the ex-mining village of Shilbottle. The original overall aim and mission of the Skills Centre was to provide the people of the district with the opportunities to gain the skills they need to survive in the 21st Century.  By providing facilities and the opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills, we hope the Skills Centre will make its contribution to the regeneration of the village.  These aims are met by running a range of both formal and informal courses for the community. Relevant educational and training opportunities, including basic Literacy and Numeracy courses, plus services that the community requires such as access to jobs information and other employment advice, childcare facilities, annual flu injections,  health activities, activities and courses for young people, advice and help with job searches, CV’s, leisure and educational facilities for all members of the community. We also have rooms for hire and have excellent off street parking.  The Centre provides facilities and services for the local and surrounding community which they would not otherwise be able to access because of issues related to rural isolation, lack of transport, cost etc.             On average we collect 200 signatures in our visitor’s book each week.
