(Maximum 8)Ashton Windmill is located on a minor road between Weare (A38) and Wedmore. Parking is available close by. This unique 18th century flour mill stands on the "Isle of Wedmore", a ridge giving commanding views of Cheddar Gorge, the Somerset Levels and Brent Knoll. A windmill is mentioned on this site as far back as 1317. The Mill ground corn for flour and beans for cattle food and last worked in 1927, the mill has been carefully restored. The windmill has straight-sided construction and is girded by three iron hoops, added by the last miller, John Stevens, to ensure that the sails ran true. It was restored to working condition in 1958, with renovations carried out in 1979 by the Dorothea Restoration Engineers. The mill recently lost half of one of its sails in a high wind. A full inspection revealed that rotting wood meant that two sails need replacing. Sedgemoor District Council have contacted sail makers in East Anglia who estimate the work will cost £7,000. It is hoped that this restoration can be arranged soon. The grounds of this picturesque windmill make a pleasant picnic spot and when it is not open an outdoor display will answer most of your questions. There are some wonderful photographs on the web site http://www.tonyhowell.co.uk/ashtonwindmill.htm
