Further Description
  • A Personal Description of Fittleton Parish  It  also incorporates the village of Haxton and is commonly known as Fittleton cum Haxton. This picturesque village in the Avon valley lies on the southeastern edge of the Salisbury Plain with a portion within its conservation area. There is the ongoing problem of noise caused by the artillery using the training area on the Plain. Fortunately, training days are well advertised giving the inhabitants the opportunity to move away for the day. Firing usually stops by early evening and is infrequent.  Traffic speed to and from the Plain along Everley Road is a problem. The Council is currently trying to establish some traffic calming in the area and has managed to stop military convoys transiting the village to access the main roads. There are few amenities within the village area, most are available in the neighbouring village of Netheravon including the village hall (Phoenix Hall) which is part owned by Fittleton Parish Council. Parishioners  pay a small fee for its use. There is a twice-weekly bus service between Amesbury and Upavon, which has two stops in the Parish without a shelter. Recently a voluntary LINK transport systems has been set up to assist those who need it. Situated on the Green under a large tree is a bench donated by a past resident enabling a good view of local activity. Situated nearby is the sole telephone box (old-style) and two notice boards, another is located near the Church. All Saints is a beautiful Norman church dating back to the 12th century that has had piecemeal restorations during the late 1800s. It also is the focal point of local social events. The adjacent graveyard is well maintained with the assistance of a small donation from the Parish Council. There are many well signposted footpaths that provide good walking in and around the valley in addition to the Plain. The Parish Council has done much recently to bring the community together. It has leased land from the Defence Agency for allotments. All available plots, except one, have been enthusiastically taken up. There is also an annual festive lights ceremony in December which illuminates the large tree on The Pound (previously known as The Green) during the Christmas season. The spirit of togetherness is further enhanced by the villagers organising a summer party. Finally, this small, clean, tidy village has much to commend it. Its major asset is that it is virtually crime free, offering its residents, a good mix of both young and retired folk, a secure place to live with easy communications with the surrounding towns.
