Further Description
  • Established in 1982, The Archway Project is a busy and successful youth project based in Southeast London.  Working closely with Police, Youth Offending Teams, Social Services and local schools we work in a preventative brief aiming to divert young people away from crime and reduce re-offending. Many of the young people we work with are in care, suffering abuse or neglect at home or have serious educational disadvantages or special needs. The majority of the Archway Project work is based around off road motorbikes, using them as a medium to engage young people in maintaining, repairing and most importantly riding a fleet of off-road motorbikes, using the incentive ‘carrot’ of an off road riding trip to hold their attention.  Despite being a motorcycle project Archway is primarily a vehicle for engaging and motivating young people, many of whom do not take part in any other structured activity, including education. The Project is able to have a positive influence in the lives of young people often at a significant time in their development. We use the young people’s interest and enthusiasm for the bikes to improve their life and social skills.  Each referral or schools group is offered a London Open College Network (LOCN) accredited course in Motorcycle Maintenance and Workshop Health and Safety, enabling the young people to gain practical skills and a qualification that they can take to an employer or to further education. The course was written and is being continuously developed by the Archway staff to make it appropriate for the young people attending. The secret of the Archway’s success is a simple carrot and stick method. Each group (currently 14 groups, run at two sites) has the chance to be taken off-road riding every 5th workshop. This is the carrot that brings young people to the project every week (girls as well as boys).  Because we don’t have our own track and cannot afford the rates charged by the two local tracks, we have to take all our young people to an off road site near Kelvedon Hatch, Essex. With 14 groups expecting a ride every 5th or 6th week we have a lot of riding trips to manage.
