Further Description
  • WHO ARE THE FAVERSHAM SEA CADETS? The Faversham Sea Cadets are local boys and girls aged 10 to 18 who are interested in learning maritime skills and traditions, in serving their community and in having serious fun with good friends. Parade hours are Tuesdays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and Fridays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Cadets also can elect to participate in training courses and outings during weekends and holidays. The Faversham Sea Cadets Unit is called TS (for ‘Training Ship’) HAZARD, based at the bottom of Quay Lane - Conduit Street, Faversham, Kent. The original vessel named HAZARD was a ship built by the town of Faversham to fight againist the Spainish Armada. TS HAZARD was founded in September 1942, this was during 'Warship Week' when a Towns were asked to sponsor a warship. TS HAZARD’s current fleet of vessels includes the Viking (a Seventeen foot launch), eight foot dingy(used with an seagull outbroad), one ASC (a combined rowing and sailing vessel), a Topper and an Bosun sailing dinghy. While the cadets pay a weekly subscription of £1 to help cover the cost of running the Unit, funding for the Unit is provided largely by individual and corporate sponsors from the local community. Brett's, for example, has joined the ranks of TS HAZARD’s corporate supporters; County Caravans has funded sporting equipment; Tesco Stores have provided tombola prizes; the Rotary Club has provided the funds for the purchase of Bell Lyres and the Shepherd Neame has contributed to the Unit’s general fund. TS HAZARD Officer-in-Charge Chief Petty Officer John Turner invites interested young people to stop by the the Unit in Conduit Street during parade hours (as noted above). Chief Turner is also looking for adult volunteers to help out as well, especially (but not exclusively) those with recognised boating qualifications; he can be reached on 01795 535702The TS HAZARD Parent and Supporters’ Association also helps raise funds for the Unit and also runs the Unit Mess. Those interested in helping to raise funds and otherwise lend a hand are welcome to give PSA Chair Vanessa a ring on 07952 792279
