Further Description
  • CLAVERDON YOUTH CLUB  ·         The new youth club – WAP (don’t ask – it’s the kids’ secret!) started in earnest on 3rd March 2006, following 3 months of planning by a small group of adults and kids. ·         We meet on a Friday evening at 7.30 to 9.30 at the Church Centre (although we occasionally do away-events) ·         WAP is open to kids in school years 7 to 11 (ages 11 to 16)  ·         The club costs £2 per evening, which goes toward refreshments, hire of the hall, insurance and activities.   ·         Membership numbers have been growing steadily since the start, and there are now around 20 kids.  We usually have at least 12 kids each Friday.  New members would be very welcome – especially girls to help balance the numbers. ·         The club is managed by a committee of both kids and adults.  The offices of Chairman and Treasurer are filled by adults – with a child deputy; secretary and events officer are kids, with an adult deputy.  ·         The constitution sets out that ideally 3 or more helpers should be present for the activities.  Most helpers are already CRB checked.  A helpers’ rota has been created so that the onus for supervising doesn’t fall on a handful of people – the expectation being that all parents will help when they can – but you don’t have to be a parent! All offers of help are much appreciated! ·         The Youth Club aims to allow kids to meet with others of a similar age regardless of which secondary school they go to, in a pleasant social environment, to do things they want to do (within reason!), and give them the opportunity to try new activities they might not otherwise have the opportunity to do. ·         Activities so far have included table tennis, rounders, various games and card games, a village walk, quizzes, bowling, and watching videos.  Future activities that the kids have suggested include trips to theme parks, karting, paintballing, finding out about American Independence Day, putting on a play, playing music together, learning ballroom dancing(!), and raising money to fund some of these things by offering such services as car washing and gardening. ·         We are also in the process of applying for funding from the local authority.  If successful, this will allow us to purchase dedicated equipment that will offer a greater selection of activities for the kids.    Helen HughesChairman
