  • The Air Training Corps is a national youth organisation. Its aims are laid down in the royal Warrant asto promote and encourage amongst young people a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Forceto provide training that will be useful in service and civil lifeto develop skills of leadership and good citizenshipto foster the spirit of adventure  With approximately 49000 members, aged from 13 to 22 years, in over 1000 Squadrons nationwide, the Air Training Corps (ATC) is one of the country's premier youth organisations and the world's largest youth air training organisation. The cadets are supported by voluntary staff of nearly 10000 and 5000 Civilian Welfare Committee members. 1439 (Skelmersdale) Squadron meets in Daniels Lane, Digmoor, Skelmersdale every Monday and Friday evening from 1900 -2200 hours. the squadron is open to any teenager aged 13-17 years.  The cadets start their 15 week training program which include 10 theory subjects; map reading, first aid, history of the ATC and RAF, history of Flight, Initial Expedition Training, communications, rifle safety drill and airmanship. On successful completion of their examination they are competent enough to continue with further theoretical training to include principles of flight, navigation and airmanship. On reaching their final classification and successful completion of the examination (at 16 years) they receive a BTEC in Aviation Studies.From completing the first examination they are then eligible to take part in flying, competition rifle shooting, gliding, sport, leadership training, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, UK and overseas camps to name just a few.At 14 the cadets also work towards becoming a millennium volunteer and at 16 they will work towards a BTEC in Public Services.
