Further Description
  • Coxhoe & District Cricket ClubDid you know your village had a Cricket Club?We are one of the oldest clubs in the county founded 136 years ago in 1866. A lot of Coxhoe lads have played for this proud club over the years and we have a wonderful history and tradition to live up to.Our club has strong links with the businesses in the village and is part of the community. Our ground is behind the Leisure Centre and you get access down the lane opposite the Cricketers Pub (our base) in Cornforth Lane.Unlike the 'good' old days when everyone played for their local team and great village rivalries blossomed, today, with advances in transportation, people travel far and wide for their games. Coupled with so many other distractions in this technological world and the demise of cricket in Schools, it gets harder to bring through the youngsters into our beautiful game. It is a fact that fewer people are taking up the sport. We want to maintain our tradition of fielding two teams on a weekend and once again evolve junior teams. Our first and second teams play in the North East Durham League on Saturday afternoons with midweek cup competitions sprinkled in.Pre season indoor nets are now finished (mid April) and were very well attended. We now practice outdoors on the ground every Wednesday evening. We are based from the Cricketers Pub in Cornforth Lane and meet there the last Saturday evening of each month. This being the night we get together with friends to put the world to rights! Why not come along and support your village team. We (together with Steve and Shirley - our hosts) would be delighted to see you.Should anyone wish to become a playing or social member then just come along to the pub or the nets and introduce yourself or for more information please call:We are very pleased to welcome some new players and members to the club. The ground work is nearly complete and we are ready to start the season next week.Peter Maddison, Chairman 07740 215007Trevor Southern, Secretary 01388 420101 (works)
