Further Description
  • Selborne Traffic Action Group was formed late 2000 to develop a campaign aimed at saving one of the most famous villages in England from the devasting effects of rapidly increasing traffic volume. Selborne was home to Gilbert White, the celebrated 18th Century naturalist whose seminal work, 'The Natural History of Selborne' has rarely been out of print since first publication. Selborne houses The Wakes, a museum dedicated to the life and work of GW; it also houses an exhibition devoted to the Oates (of the Antarctic) family - father and son; father being a well-known 19th Century explorer in Africa. Local traffic planning blunders have directed 'A' road volumes of traffic onto the B3006 road running through Selborne. It has become a convenient 'rat-run' for commuter traffic between the A3 and routes North and South. Traffic volume is currently running at upwards of 8,000 vehicles per day - and increase of some 20% in the last two years. The lives of residents and visitors alike is blighted by the speed and volume of this traffic.Surrounded by National Trust lands and other attractive countryside, Selborne is a mecca for walkers and other country lovers. The Wakes Museum alone counts almost 35,000 visitors each year. The STAG campaign aims to make Selborne a safer, more attractive and quieter place for residents and visitors alike. For further information, details of membership (available to everyone) and opportunities for providing financial support, please contact Chairman Bob Thompstone or Hon.
