Further Description
  • NLCA started life as the Barnet Chinese Community Association. Christine Lee, of Christine Lee and Co., Solicitors, and John May, Consultation Manager of Barnet Council, met for the first time at a Barnet Council event on 1st December 2001. They started talking about the needs of the Chinese community in Barnet, and by the end of that afternoon Christine and John had decided to work together to set up a Community Association. In the result of this, the founding committee members of NLCA consist of professionals such as solicitors, public accountant, and property manager and education psychologist. The Consultation manager of Barnet Council also serves on the committee. The establishment of the North London Chinese Association is to ensure equal access for Chinese people in the North London Boroughs to all resources and opportunities available to communities in the boroughs, giving Chinese groups and individuals the chance to take an active part in the voluntary activities, making service better and contributing to the economy growth of the borough.1. NLCA has been exceptionally lucky in both respects. We have had generous donations from individuals, and we have a talented and hard working group of volunteers. Money is still a worry, and we are always looking for more volunteers, but we have survived the first year and we are confident we will be around for a lot longer. The biggest challenge we face right now is combining with the Brent and Barnet Chinese Association, who will be joining NLCA very soon. The feedback we get from the Chinese community is that we are doing a good job. Our elderly members in particular value the activities we have put on for them, while the whole community has congratulated us on our initiative in putting on an Anti - Racism Press Conference. We persuaded Barnet Council, Barnet Primary Care Trust (National Health Service) and the Metropolitan Police to join NLCA on the platform to tell the press (and radio and TV) that SARS is not an excuse for racial abuse and harassment of Chinese people. "The best thing you've ever done" was the reaction from one local trader. Meanwhile, we get lots of good feedback from the local Cou
