    A Cold Winter.

The British Isles does not enjoy a climate but enjoys weather and more often as not different seasonal weather in the same week, which in, my opinion, makes them an ideal place to live. For many years I would write in the newsletter predicting that we would have a cold and harsh winter, only to find another mild winter ensued, so I gave up forecasting and enjoyed the balmy temperatures.

So far we have not had the strong winds that have accompanied snowfalls in past years blocking the roads with substantial drifts isolating the village for several days. When that happens not even your 4x4 will be of any use; I have never had a 4x4 though would buy one only for the commanding view of the road offered by the raised driving position. It is an interesting fact that the Ford Motor Company in America produced cars up to the 1950 model year with a twelve- inch ground clearance mainly to aid traction in snow and on unmade rural roads.

The County Council have made it quite clear that “C” class roads will not be gritted / salted but roadside heaps of grit will be maintained and topped up as required. As far as Lindsey is concerned we only see a gritting lorry the day before the onset of the thaw.

Congratulations to our postman, our paper delivery men (Daily and Sunday) and our milkman who continued throughout the snowy weather. No congratulations for our refuse collectors however. At one time, refuse was collected in the traditional metal dustbins which were collected and returned to your backdoor. Now we have to deliver a wheelie-bin to the roadside for collection, I know it was over the holiday period but why did it take so long to organise collections, I’m probably being unkind but why do I keep thinking about the organising of a convivial evening in a brewery?

Our winters have a nasty habit of having a sting in its tail, so just be prepared for another cold snap around March.

    Soup and Cheese Lunch.

The Friends of Lindsey Church are once again holding their ever-popular Soup and Cheese Lunch on Thursday 25 February at Folly Farm, by kind invitation of Frances and Michael Moore, tickets £10 from Mabel Blacklaws 01449 740 789 or Ian Mac Gregor 01767 211521.
Numbers are limited for this popular event, early booking advisable to avoid disappointment.

    Request for Village History.

The Village Hall Management Committee are seeking any photographs of events held in the Village Hall or photographs of the Hall in years gone by, anything that relates to the past.
Contact Mabel Blacklaws with any material on 01449 740789 or mabel23@f2s.com

    Village Quiz Night.

I know it’s not until Saturday 13th March at 7.30pm but now is the time to book your table. Bring your own drink and food be it a bag of crisps or a hot three course meal. Tables of eight contestants don’t worry if you are on your own, as you will join a table to make up the numbers. Costing £5 per person you won’t find a more enjoyable evening anywhere in the whole of Suffolk.

From David Waldron, Chairman Lindsey Parish Council.

I am delighted to report that Ian Mac Gregor has been awarded a Community Achievement Award by Babergh District Council. These awards are made to members of the public who through their own efforts have given outstanding support and service to their community. Ian was nominated for the award by the Parish Council and the following is a précis of the proposal that Chris Yemm wrote.

“Ian, who is retired. and his wife Shirley have lived in Lindsey for over fifty years. He has been a member of the Parochial Church Council for over ten years where in his role as Church Warden he has given freely of his time and skills. As well as transporting the organist of the day a
