Amici are delighted to have been invited by the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Taunton to perform there on Good Friday for the third year in succession. Previously we have performed Mozart and Haydn – this time we are scaling one of the most awesome peaks in the choral repertoire, the mighty Mass in B Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach.

It has been described as ‘the greatest work of music of all ages and of all peoples’. Right from the very beginning, the solemn grandeur of the Kyrie leaves the listener in no doubt that they are in for a very special experience. There is plenty more to come, however, with probably the most glorious Gloria ever written, and the rich flowing lines of the Sanctus to name just two. Stunning and virtuosic choral writing abounds in this work, and to hear this work live in performance is an intensely overwhelming experience for many.

There are also plenty of opportunities for the soloists to display their talents. Amici have presented this work before, in 2004. Then as now, we drew the soloists from the Young Concert Artists’ Trust (YCAT), an organisation which identifies, nurtures and promotes outstanding young classical soloists and chamber ensembles at the outset of their careers. In 2004, we had a new soprano by the name of Elizabeth Watts, who is now world famous and firmly set on the path to international stardom. This year, soprano Caroline MacPhie and mezzo-soprano Helen Sherman both appear by permission of YCAT.

Amici are delighted to be joined again by OrchestraWest, whose playing has added such lustre to our performances in the past.

We do hope that you will join us for this performance on Good Friday.

Amici gratefully acknowledges the support of the BBC perfroming arts funds for their assistance in staging this concert.
