Further Description
  • Get stuck into game with top chefs at the 12th annual Thame Country Fair
Now in its 12th year, Thame Country Fair is back and bigger than ever.

With opportunities to enjoy the best of British produce; be amazed by the sport of kings in the Falconry Village and gun dog antics. The show taking place over the Easter weekend also features mounted games, scurry racing, and the hugely popular ‘Learn How To...’ attractions which offer free 20 minute tutorials supervised by Living Heritage’s experts. Many of the attractions and entertainments are staged in two centrally located all day arenas.

Top chefs Tony Robertson and Rob Marles will be showing how to whip up the perfect pigeon pie or rabbit roulade as part of the Game to Eat campaign which aims to get more wild food into our kitchens. Not only is the majority of game lower in fat than conventional meat, it also has a carbon footprint of zero and tastes fantastic to boot. Equally exciting are the foodie delights on offer in the rest of the ‘Food Glorious Food’ tent, with plenty of local produce and lashings of home-made smoothies to keep you going. From perfectly matured cheese to rare breed sausages and moreish home-made cakes, there’s something to suit every palate and not a chocolate egg in sight!

If the cookery demonstrations have whetted your appetite for game, head over to see Simon Pakefield’s ferrets. Simon is a dab hand at catching rabbits. At the shows his popular demonstrations show off these skills and his dialogue is not to be missed. Anglers will also have plenty to interest them with rod-maker Peter Johnson on hand to show visitors the art of split cane rod making. The Falconry Village gives you the chance to meet a whole variety of birds from sakers and hawks to eagles and vultures and for those looking for something slightly different, owls.

Wild animals aren’t the only sort you’ll find at Thame. The main arena will play host to all things equestrian including daredevil scurry racing and mounted games which will see participants taking on a course with more twists and turns than a formula one track – and at similar speed! Elsewhere, the Dog Zone will have plenty of canine action including working dog demonstrations, gun dog handling and terrier racing. And if your very own canine fancies a slice of the action, there’s the hilarious ‘Chase the Bunny’ race plus a selection of fun classes which will put your pooch’s skills to the test. Even if your pooch is not so quick but looks really cute you can still enter the Fun Dog Show.

Don’t worry if your dog handling skills are a little rusty though. Beginners and those wanting to brush up their angling, falconry (fly a hawk) and gun dog handling skills can get involved with the hugely popular ‘Learn How To…’ attraction which offers free 20 minute tutorials supervised by Living Heritage’s experts.

If that all sounds a little too exhausting, check out the Craft Show which features some of Britain’s best arts and crafts specialists, with nationally selected artists, designers and craftsman giving demonstration and exhibiting. Showing off their craft and skills, their demonstrations include glass-blowing, stick making, coppice skills, chainsaw carving and a blacksmith competition. Your chance to buy everything from pure beeswax candles to fabulous fashion and pretty pottery from over 200 specialist stall holders, the Craft Show certainly has plenty to get excited about.
