  • Game on with top chefs and chainsaw carvers at Broadlands

Can’t wait until June to see England take on Germany? Then head to Hampshire Country Fair to see the English take on the Germans at Chainsaw Carving. Talented teams from across the UK and Germany will go head to head to see whose technique comes top and you never know, an English victory at Chainsaw Carving might just be the start of a winning streak for our national teams.

To find food fit for an England captain, head over to the ‘Food Glorious Food’ tent for a succulent selection of local produce. From perfectly matured cheese to rare breed sausages and moreish home-made cakes, there’s something to suit every palate.

While you’re there, take a little time out to get inspired by Game to Eat chefs Tony Robertson and Rob Marles who will be whipping up a variety of creative ways to get those pheasants out of your freezer and onto your table. Whether you fancy a slice of pigeon pie or a little rabbit roulade, the guys will show you how to get the most out of an underrated food source that is both lower in fat and more eco-friendly than conventional meat.

If the cookery demonstrations have whetted your appetite for game, head over to see Simon Pakefield’s ferrets. Simon is a dab hand at catching rabbits. At the shows his popular demonstrations show off these skills and his dialogue is not to be missed. Anglers will also have plenty to interest them with experts from the Salmon and Trout Association on hand to show you how to land a prize winning fish. The Falconry Village gives you the chance to meet a whole variety of birds from sakers and hawks to eagles and vultures and for those looking for something slightly different, owls.

Wild animals aren’t the only sort you’ll find at Hampshire. The main arena plays host to all things equestrian including daredevil scurry racing and mounted games which will see participants taking on a course with more twists and turns than a formula one track – and at a similar speed! Elsewhere, the Dog Zone will have plenty of canine action including working dog demonstrations, gun dog handling and terrier racing. And if your very own canine fancies a slice of the action, there’s the hilarious ‘Chase the Bunny’ race plus a selection of fun-classes which will put your pooch’s skills to the test. Even if your pooch is not so quick but looks really cute you can still enter the Fun Dog Show.

Don’t worry if your dog handling skills are a little rusty though. Beginners and those wanting to brush up their angling, shooting and gun dog handling skills can get involved with the hugely popular ‘Learn How To…’ attraction which offers free 20 minute tutorials supervised by Living Heritage’s experts.

If that all sounds a little too exhausting, check out the Craft Show which features some of Britain’s best arts and crafts specialists, with nationally selected artists, designers and craftsman giving demonstration and exhibiting. Showing off their craft and skills, their demonstrations include glass-blowing, stick making, coppice skills, chainsaw carving and a blacksmith competition. Your chance to buy everything from pure beeswax candles to fabulous fashion and pretty pottery from over 200 specialist stall holders, the Craft Show certainly has plenty to get excited about.
