The Warsash Local History Society was created to foster interest in the history of Warsash itself and its close neighbour, Hook. We are building a permanent local history archive to be maintained for future generations, and both encourage and support new research projects. The society holds regular meetings with guest speakers, and provides a social gathering of people interested in their local history. Everything that you need to know about the society, including details of meetings, membership and trips, can be found on the WLHS Website. More info from Glenda Edmondson Secretary 01489 573573755
Thanks to a generous legacy from the late Roy Knight, the Society has been able to afford to take on the lease of the former Angling Shop at 24 Shore Road for a period of two years. Many of you will remember Roy and given him many of the pictures which form the basis of the Society's archives and you may also have enjoyed the Exhibitions in the Victory Hall. Roy's wish was that we should use his legacy to set up a permanent centre to display the village's history.
This very exciting development will enable the Society to bring its archives together under one roof and try to establish a Heritage Centre for Warsash. The Society hopes to gain support from businesses and residents in the village so that the Centre can become a permanent home for its archive material and a resource for all those interested in the history of our village. Once the Centre is up and running we shall be delighted to receive offers of help so that we can open the centre on a regular basis and share all the material we have collected. It is a great privilege to live in a village with such an interesting history but regrettable that so much is unknown to present residents. We hope the new Centre will go some way to rectifying this situation but we are all aware that we need support from beyond the Society if this venture is to succeed. More news in due course
The centre is open Tuesday to Saturday from 1030 to 1230, then 2pm to 4pm, and on Sunday 1030 to 1230 and is run by volenteers. Click on PDF file for picture of centre
Plans are being drawn up for a comprehensive exhibition of "Warsash through the Ages" in the Spring of 2012. "Archive days" have been held throughout 2011 for people to ontribute photos and memorabilia, and the recently established Heritage Centre in Shore Road has
encouraged input from many local families. The event will be held at Warsash Victory Hall over the first May Bank Holiday weekend, 5th, 6th and 7th May 2012.
