  • WHAT IS THE MINORCA OPENCAST PROTEST GROUP (MOPG)
    The group was formed after a Public Meeting in October 2008 called to oppose plans being developed by UK Coal to apply for an opencast coal mine on the former Minorca Colliery site between Measham and Swepstone.
    Until July 2009 MOPG was researching various aspects of this proposal including;
    National, Regional and Local Mineral Planning Policy
    UK Coal plc
    Reviewing other planning applications
    Our results have been published in our 17 newsletters and 23 Press Releases that are available on this site. These cover the period up to our third public meeting on August 5th 2009. During this period our membership grew from 140 to 200+. Information about the newsletters and press releases issued so far are to be found through this page. (this part is still under development)
    Since July 2009 we have entered a different phase in our history, concentrating our efforts on the decision making process and trying to persuade Leicestershire County Council, the mineral planning authority, to deny the planning application from UK Coal.
