    A Carol Service to remember….!
75 people (is this a record?) joined our traditional Lindsey carol service this year. Another highlight was the Serendipity choir who very kindly gave up their time to fill the choir stalls and lead our singing. Not only were we treated to harmony and descant soaring above the congregation carols, we were also treated to the 16th century processional carol ‘Gaudete! Christus est natus’ plus three solo ‘a cappella’ carols. Thank you to Nansi Browne and her choir. After the traditional lessons and carols we were served delicious mulled wine and hot mince pies. What a joyful occasion!

    Christmas by Candlelight
This year has been a year of firsts. Instead of the Christmas morning church service, the PCC decided to schedule a midnight communion by candlelight. What a magical spectacle greeted everyone as they entered the church! The church was bathed in candlelight – well over two hundred candles were used to fill the space creating a wonderful Christmas atmosphere. Candles in the window cills; candles on the pillars; candles in the staircase and special candle arrangements at the altar and lectern. What a wonderful way to start the Christmas celebrations!!

An important date for the diary Another first for Lindsey
On Sunday February 5th the Bishop of Edmundsbury and Ipswich, the Right Reverend Nigel Stock has accepted our invitation to come to Lindsey and to officiate at a Service of Celebration. This promises to be a very special event and we have arranged this as a Benefice service so that all our friends and colleagues from our benefice parishes are able to attend.
This is a triple celebration of…..
    • The Queens diamond jubilee of the Queen’s Accession (6th February 1952)
    • The 350th anniversary of Cranmers Book of Common Prayer (1662-2012)
    • The re-dedication of the restored Lindsey Altar Frontal
    (see elsewhere for details)
This will be a joyous, important and special time for St. Peter’s Church, Lindsey and we are delighted, proud and honoured to be able to host such a celebration.
The service will begin at 0930 and will be followed by light refreshments in either the church or village hall.

A sad tale with a happy ending
Many churches have more than one Altar Frontal. St. Peter’s in Lindsey has just one. Its history is unknown, but believed to date from around 1825 and one fact is known for sure – it was not made for the Altar table in Lindsey. This frontal is deep red burgundy velvet with a central motif embroidered in gold thread with lovely coloured leaves and stems. It is of the Laudian style, that is, it covers the top, front, back and sides of the altar and is particularly suitable for altars that stand away from a wall. The sad bit… the Lindsey frontal had seen better days. It was damp, frayed, faded and draped all over the floor. Worse still the motif was, for all intents and purposes, in tatters with gold thread missing or detached, the embroidery worn and the central backing had disappeared. We were advised (by experts!) to replace the frontal with a new, modern item and relegate the old one to the scrap heap. The happy ending ..after nearly a year of ‘toing and froing’ and a lot of investigation the church submitted the frontal for scrutiny to Mary Collings Church Furnishings in Ipswich and her unbelievably expert and professional restorer, Jackie Page. We were advised that restoration was possible (almost mandatory!) and for about £1,000 we could have the motif totally restored, plus the velvet sculpted and cut to fit our altar table and re-fringed. A Lindsey donor came forward and this work has now been completed. Anyone who knew the old cloth would be amazed! Words cannot describe the transformation and inspection is encouraged!! We have been told this will last us another 50 years.
Bishop Nigel Stock will re-dedicate Lindsey’s restored Altar Frontal on February 5th during a special Service
