Further Description
  • Ewe Close Farm is a small lowland hill farm of some 87 acres  overlooking the Solway Firth in North West Cumbria which is dedicated to raising rare and native breeds of cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry.Located on the boundary between Gilcrux and Plumbland parishes, the farm is open to the public at weekends and on bank holidays between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm until 25th October 2009. During the school summer holidays, the farm will be open every day between Tuesdays and Fridays from 28th July until 28th August 2009. Entry is £5.00 for adults, £3.50 for children 3 years and over and £4.50 (concessions). Under 3s are free. Season tickets are available. (£12 adults and £8.00 children). There are a variety of activities available to visitors - chicken feeding, egg hunting, egg blowing and painting, goat milking, quizzes, an unaccompanied woodland walk, accompanied farm walks, tractor and trailer rides and (depending on the time of year and the weather) goat kid and lamb bottle feeding and pony riding / driving. August bank holiday weekend will be devoted to pony care days (booking necessary - see website for contact details).Highland, Shetland and Dexter Cattle are to be found on the farm, as are Hebridean, Manx Laoghtan, Dartmoor, Castlemilk Moorit, Ouessant and Teeswater sheep and (mainly) Saanen goats. Grey Faced Leicester mules and Swaledale ewes are crossed with Dartmoor and Teeswater rams to produce excellent "ordinary" lamb for the local markets.Rare and native breeds of poultry and waterfowl are also bred for local sales. The raising and keeping of poultry and waterfowl are popular hobbies in Cumbria. The farm is a low intensity "traditional" farm where a wide variety of rare and native breed of animals are reared and displayed. The buildings and facilities are generally speaking "low tech" and we use as little as possible in the way of chemicals on the ground. We hope to gain Rare Breed Survival Trust Approved Farm Park status in due course as and when the compost toilet system is completed. It is presently under construction - the building is complete but the plumbing has yet to be installed. We presently make do with a portable system!Cattle and goats are milked on the farm for cheese and butter making which takes place in the dairy. Dairy products are sold at the farm’s cheese counter as well as locally through Farmers Markets and other outlets. See http://www.wardhalldairy.co.uk for details. Our meat is sold live through local stock markets. In due course the farm hopes to have its own cutting facility where our meat and meat from other small producers can be prepared for consumption by a growing network of local consumers. Depending on availability you can buy a limited range of meat products in the farm’s shop as well. Ewe Close is the base from which “Cumbria Local Food Direct” is being launched. This is a boxed food scheme for connecting local consumers to local producers. Consumers will order online (or by phone) and will be able to have a complete week's shop - sourced, as far as is possible, from local producers, delivered to their door - whether on a one off or regular weekly basis. We are CEVAS accredited and educational visits by local schools take place regularly. In addition to showing what the farm does, we tailor the activities undertaken by the visiting pupils to their curriculum requirements. We have a tea room where you can buy light refreshments in the form of tea and coffee, cakes and sandwiches. You are welcome to bring your own picnic lunch if you prefer. We can point you to one of many suitable picnic sites around the farm. The farm yard, tea room and toilets are accessible for wheelchair users and the trailer can also accommodate wheelchairs. For more details, click the website link above (or paste http://www.eweclosefarm.co.uk into your browser). You can also telephone 01697 321 917 and leave a contact number and we'll get back to you.We look f
