Residents of a tiny Hertfordshire community are expecting the big freeze to continue - because their hamlet is called Cold Christmas.

The tiny hamlet near Ware, Hertfordshire, is home to around 50 residents but sees a steady stream of tourists photographing the village road signs.

Around 1ft of snow has fallen on the area over the last week but residents believe the cold snap is set to continue until Christmas - because of the unusual name.

Mary Bennett, 87, who has lived in Cold Christmas for 50 years, said: ''Last year we had a white Christmas but it's hard to say what will happen this year.

''I don't like the cold weather at all because it stops me getting out and about.  It is a very unusual name for a village and I don't know where it originated from.

''A few years ago some local wits changed a signpost for 'Cold Christmas Lane'
to read 'Cold Christmas Pudding'.  But we are all very proud of the name.''

Betting company Paddy Power is currently offering odds of 5/2 that 1mm of snowfall will be recorded in London on Christmas day.
