John Chapman
Cotherstone, Durham (3.8 miles away)
Does anyone know the location of the Cotherstone Acadamy which was run by my ancestor John Chapman until he moved it to Headlam Hall in 1803?**I believe John's school building in Cotherstone was taken over by his brother George Chapman. George's school at Cotherstone was one of those 'Yorkshire Schools' investigated by Charles Dickens before he wrote Nicholas Nickleby (published 1838) and may have been the person upon which Squeers of Dotheboys Hall was based.**George placed advertisements in the London Morning Chronicle such as this one on 24 Sep 1819:**'EDUCATION.- Young Gentlemen are carefully and advantageously EDUCATED~ by Mr. GEORGE CHAPMAN~ Cotherstone~ Yorkshire## they are instructed in all the useful branches of the Mathematics requisite for the counting house and map of business~ are treated with kindness~ and in every respect as one of their own family## they are liberally boarded~ clothed and educated~ for 20 guineas per annum## no vacation. The Greek~ Latin and French Languages~ and drawing~ are extra. Particulars and respectable references of Mr. Maylam~ agent~ 19~ Berner's-street~ Church-street~ White-chapel. - Mrs. Chapman is in town~ and will accompany the pupils down early in October.'

I recently visited your village on the trail of my Heslop ancestors. I particularly want to find out about my ggg grandfather Robert Heslop who was born in Romaldkirk but must have been in Newbiggin as his son William was born there. Robert was a lead smelter. I was lucky enough to take a look inside your chapel and was amazed at the amount of information on display. Sadly I am no further with my searching so any help from residents of Newbiggin would be very gratefully received. Thankyou.
