Simon Barker
Hatfield Heath, Essex (2.5 miles away)
I am researching my family and have traced them back to Hatfield Heath. The earliest I can find is James Barker who was born in 1786 and married to Elizabeth, born 1794. He was a bricklayer and lived in 1841 at or near Great Heath Farm/Old Stag Public House. One of his sons, Nathaniel ( my great, great grandfather), again a bricklayer, was born in 1816 and married first, Susan (nee Archer) and second, Mary Ann Coston (Nee Tricker). His son Thomas (my great grandfather) was born in 1851 ( a builder and seedsman) and married Eliza (nee Sapsford) from Little Hallingbury and lived between the British School House and The Manse. My Grandfather, Arthur was born in 1884 and eventually moved to Cromer. I have recently visited Hatfield Heath to continue my research and would be interested to hear from anyone who can throw any further light on the families

As a child I lived at the lock house in Spellbrook where my dad was the lockkeeper from around 1954/5-1962/3. His name was Charles Edward Welsh~ my mother Doris~ brother Michael & in the later years my baby brother Charles.** Both Mick & I attended Spellbrook primary school~ where our dad for a time was the "lolly pop man".**We spent the summer months out in the boats that we used to sub let out~ drank most of the proffits with the soft drinks that we sold & generally had an idylic childhood although we didn't know it at the time.**A day out to us was a walk or cycle for a picnic at Hatfield Forest~ cars for us didn't exist.**

Dear Jenny Have finally found your reply! Thank you so much. I have actually been given a series of photos of the Miles family so some of these should be of your friend Letty. I think they were here from 1958-82 and the pictures that I have were brought by Dick Miles to the previous owner of the farm. She passed them on to me when we moved in. It's fascinating to see the developments and compare. Can't find any info on Dick Miles who was a local Councillor or any records of any of the children's births. Maybe they were born over seas? A lady rang from South America about four years ago to see if we did B&B because she used to play here at about the time you knew the farm. She said they kept donkeys (we have two) and horses and pigs and grew various crops. I'd love to know more. My children are now at Spellbrook Primary School and I am interested in the history of the school as well. I know that the children raised money to plant a wood in Aberfan as a memorial after the lan

Good evening Margaret
My friend was called Letticia (Letty) and she was their youngest child. If I remember correctly she had 3 sisters, I had little contact with them as I think that they must have attended boarding school but they were very into ballet & had horses.
The Miles family moved into your house during the time that we lived at the lock & Letty attended the primary school where I went along the main road. They were certainly living there by 1959 as I have a couple of really small photos that are dated they were certainly still living there well into the 70's as I believe that they campained against the airport expansion (Stansted). Dick was a little eccentric, wore very small glasses, had a beard, mastache & longish curly hair often wore a boater. I dont remember an awful lot about mum (Henrietta) except that she had really long hair which if it was down reached her bottom.
I remember playing in your house it was a wonderful place & huge we could play sardines, there were

Jenny Have only just seen your reply. We are on the main road, set back with a granary building. Hope you pick this up as I am still very interested in any history relating to the house. I know that the Miles family lived here for a number of years. Dick and Henrietta Miles had four or five children and he was a local councillor in the 1970s. Were these people your friends? I'd love to know more.

Margaret
Sorry for delay in getting back to you, I wanted to pick my brother's brain as being older he would remember more than me.
Howevert he has reminded me that there was more than one farm. The one near to use was called Lock Farm & there was also one on the main road where my friend used to live.
Which one are you asking about?

Did you know the people who lived at Spellbrook Farm? I live there now and am trying to find out about the people who have lived here, what they farmed here etc. It is relatively easy to get information between 1841 and 1901 but trickier to find anything on either side without visiting the local studies library in Hertford - not easy with a two year old in tow. Any information gratefully received.

I am researching the history of Sarah Pearson who was the School mistress at Matching school (closed 1969) from about 1876 to 1881 when she became ill and may have died. A copy of the school log book is in the County Records office in Chelmsford. Her cousin Kate was a Pupil Teacher there also~ but she too died suddenly aged 19 years in October 1883. If you know anything of the school or its staff during this period I would be delighted to hear from you.
