I am researching my family tree and Know my great grandfather was George Cann who lived in Spreyton Cottage at Whiddon Down with his wife Ellen..I know there are a lot of Canns in the Tawton area but was wondering if anyone has knowledge of my great grandfathers line. Many thanks.June

I just discovered this website. I am a descendant of Ephraim Teigncombe/ Tinkham who migrated to America in 1632 from Barnstaple~ Devon~ as a servant of Timothy Hatherly. I have traced Ephraim back two earlier generations (John and Robarte)in Barnstaple. Robarte apparently moved to Barnstaple from elsewhere shortly before 1589 when his daughter Ann was born there. I am certain that his ancestors originally came from the area near Teigncombe Manor~ which is now a sheep farm. I visited Teigncombe Farm twice~ the last time with my brother~ and I am interested in keeping in touch with anyone interested in its history~ including whoever lives there now. I particularly remember the remains of the chapel there - just some stone rubble when I was there~ and I brought a piece home and framed it! It was a bed-and-breakfast inn then. We visited the Exeter library and got some history of Teigncombe and I also bought a copy of A History of Chagford by Jane Haytor-Haynes~ which has a lot of history about Teigncombe and vicinity in it. I suppose that the tenants who lived at the manor came centuries earlier from the stone circles at Dartmoor? - but of course nobody knows about that far back. Anyway~ I would be delighted if anyone would reply to this item - and about the situation there now.
