I am a descendant of John STILES & Mary WHARTON, who around 1792 moved with their family from Thrandeston Suffolk East Anglia England to Islington, because of the depression in that area due to the Industral Revolution in the North West of England. John & Mary had 17 children and I have managed to trace around 10 to the present day. John STILES was a coffin maker, their children followed in carpentry, they were non comformist, congregationalist, 2 of his children John & Thomas Styles became congrgational ministers. Their their siblings married into Islington families such as DUNHILL, TIDMARSH, MILLARD MANNING & MENZIES. William was the 2nd son and carried on with the business, later he branch out in quality work in 'posh' houses, his reputation reach the ears of a Irish nobleman, and was commission work I believe in Dublin. William retired at the age of 40 because he made so much money, he retired in Ilford, on my record he died in Islington. I am very interested in this family plot. John Stiles had 17 children, I have only found about 5 with sibling with children to 2010 so far.   I am trying to find out more about William Styles who was an undertaker in Islington in the 1830s. When I saw that your John was a coffin maker, I felt sure that the two men must be connected... Are they?
  "Mr William Styles" (as he is listed in the register of burials) performed funerals for three members of the same family during the cholera outbreak. After the first death, he bought a grave plot for the other members of the family.

I am researching my paternal grandmother EMILY SARAH CROOKS. She was born in Clerkenwell, Middlesex, London on 13 October, 1861. Her parents were (father) FREDERICK GEORGE CROOKS and (mother) ANNIE ELIZABETH MILLER. Her father's occupation - bookseller. He was involved in various aspects of the printing industry during his working life.
Emily was one of nine children in total. She had two brothers - Frederick William and Alpha Charles. Her sisters were Amy Harriett, Elizabeth Leonora, (twins) Emma & Ellen died at birth, Louisa Morton and Theodora.
From the 1871 UK Census I know that Emily was placed in the Central London District School, Hanwell, Middlesex along with Charles & Elizabeth. Her sister Theodora was placed in another institution.
We have found a death notice for Frederick George Crooks who was listed on the 1880 US Federal Census living with his widowed sister Sarah Morton and her daughter Louise Morton. Frederick George was aged 55 and died aged in Boston, USA. We are investigating the life of the family members after Frederick deserted the family soon after they were admitted to the workhouse in 1869. Frederick's occupation at the time the children were admitted was "labourer".
The 1881 UK Census shows Emily employed in the household of Dame Mary Jane Flower, baronet's widow of 24 Lowndes Square, Chelsea, London as a housemaid aged 20.
Dame Mary Jane Flower died on 4 February 1889 and by obtaining her will we found she had left Emily a large sum of money for this time - 500 pounds in total.
Emily sailed for New Zealand some time after she received her inheritance and married William Henry Batson on 26 August 1889 in the Office of the Registrar of Marriages, Dunedin. I do not know when she arrived and whether she sailed with William Batson.
We then found that this marriage was bigamous - William Batson was already married to Emily Lucy Julia Hicks at Bethnal Green in Sep. qtr. 1881.

Further research found that Emily Lucy Julia Hicks and Emily Sarah Crooks had been placed in the same workhouse so we wonder whether they knew each other because they were only a couple of years apart in age.

From PapersPastNZ we know Emily worked in Christchurch at Burke's Family Hotel where she was witness to an accidental death of a pensioner in April 1894. I also have five studio photographs taken at Tyree Photographic Studio, Nelson dated mid 1894 which I obtained from the Nelson Provincial Museum. From the Christchurch Electoral roll of 1896 we know Emily was employed as a ladies maid at 32 Park Terrace, Christchurch to Isabel Marion Grace May Banks widow of Frederick Banks (died 30 October 1894). Isabel Banks remarried Rev. Dr Tuberville Cory-Thomas on 10 January, 1899 in at St. Michael's, Chester Square, London. I have been unable to find out how long Emily was in her employ or when she left New Zealand.
We believe it was sometime in late 1899 or early 1900. She moved to Sydney where her son Aubrey Cecil Crooks was born on 3 August 1900. She later moved to the northern rivers area of NSW where she met John Jacob Deal who she married on 2 March 1911 at Holy Trinity Church, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. They lived at Newrybar, NSW at this time and she died in Tweed Heads on 26 January, 1946.
There is still so much unknown information I am hoping you can help.

I'm seeking information on Margarita Teresina Gambardella born on the first of May~ 1931 to Francesco Antonio and Winifred Catherine (nee Smith) Gambardella. Winifred Smith was my aunt and eventually divorced Francesco some time in the 1930s.Their daughter remained with the family in Lewisham~ whilst Winifred remarried and moved to Australia. The marriage of Francesco and Winifred took place in 1930 with one of the witnesses listed a Filomena Gambardella~ any information would be appreciated as Winifred's children from her second marriage are curious as to what became of their sister.

Loved the marble statue in the foyer - a maiden sitting~ I used to stroke her lovely long fingers! I swam with the Paddington Swim Club on Tuesday nights from 1955-57.
