Culworth, Northamptonshire (3.4 miles away)
Does anyone have information on Mannings who lived in Culworth around**1781? My first Manning (Joseph - born about 1781) came from Culworth in 1800 and settled in Spratton~ Northamptonshire when he married a Spratton girl named Hannah. Am trying to trace my family tree back further than this and since there were and are so many Mannings in Northamptonshire it is like looking for a needle in a haystack!

The first Manning I discovered married and settled in Spratton Northamptonshire. His marriage (to Hannah of Spratton) recorded that he was a batchelor of Culworth. This is just in the hope that someone knows**of any Manning family living in Culworth around or before his birth in 1781.**A bit like looking for a needle in a haystack since there is a lot of Mannings in Northamptonshire!

Hello any.one that remembers me in Byfield. I wonder if anyone could tell me or put me in contact with the "Waterfield" family. Mr waterfield was choirmaster at the church~ and he had three children ~ One who is named Patrick ~whom I would very much like to contact~ He also had two sisters I remember one of their names is Janet. They all sang at the church in the choir. If anyone could help me out I would be very greatfull. Many thanks in advance~ Paul Clarke.

My first memorys of Byfield dates back to 1937 when I first attended the school infant class. My teahcer was Mrs Young and Mr Jackson was the Headteacher when I left in 1946. I lived at 2 Whitecroft Cottages that was without a bathroom~ so a tin bath and an outside loo was used. The loo paper was newspaper cut up and hung on a string. An outside wash-house was used on a Monday~ consisting of a copper and dolly tub. As children we went picking blackberrys and bluebells from the woods~ also hedge violets. We walked down to Boddington Pool for picnics~ passing a camp where Italian Prisoners of War were housed in wartime. The village hall was situated behind the Rose and Crown~ and on a Saturday night RAF servicemen from Chipping Warden and locally billeted soldiers came to dance. Mainly to Victor Sylvester records with the local girls. I remember queing for bread and doughnuts at Mr Smiths bakery~ and people kept pigs that were slaughtered in their back gardens by Bert Wingrove~ a local man. The great event of the village was the May Day when a May Queen was elected~ and we danced around the Maypole. My school friends were Esme Haynes~ Gladys Barnes~ Rita Stowe~ Marie Lawrie. Rose Spriggins and Lillian Seath were evacuated from London and returned after the war ended. My father Mr Albert Ti##pler organised a concert of local talent~ tourning the villages to raise money towards a playing field for the village. Among the artists were Tom Buckle~ Glenis Hayes~ Florence Hemming and myself. A local farmers son~ Peter Bromley played an accordian and told jokes~ he was tragically killed in a motor cycle accident. I got married in Byfield in August 1950 to Peter Stuchbury of Woodford Halse who is now deceased. I now live in Skegness and would be pleased to hear from anyone who remembers me (Barbara Tipler) at school.

My Grandmother~ Violet Robbins nee Horner~ ran the village shop. She was married in 1912 to George James Robbins who was drowned in Sowerlands Lake in July 1933. They had three sons: Albert George who died in 1979~ Leonard Charles who was killed in a motorbike accident near Banbury in 1938 and my father~ Douglas Eddy~ born in 1920. Going back through the family line of my Grandfather~ I can get back to one: Thomas Robbins~ c1781~ born in Gloucestershire but going back through the family line on my Grandmother's side~ I can go back through Horner~ Bartlett~ Russell~ Gardner (or Garner) Gilson (or Gilks) Austell~ (or Astell or Austin) and Corbett to one: Mary Corbett c.1673 all born around the Farnborough~ Avon Dassett~ Cropredy and Long Compton areas. If anyone has any photographs or documentation or could point me in the direction of anything to do with any of these families~ or indeed if anyone remembers my Grandmother or my father~ I would be very grateful. Thank you so much.
