I am trying to find out who were the parents of James Delahay who married Sarah Phillips in Cusop on the 16th July 1756. Any help appreciated. Hit a blank wall for years and years!

Thank-you Steve,I shall enjoy a 'rootle' round the churchyards anyway. I need to get more familiar with the countryside in the area. I have visited before, but this was when I had no idea family came from there. If you have looked in Cusop,Almeley and Peterchurch, I won't concentrate on them but just visit and soak up the genes!I know it is an outside chance with gravestones but I have been lucky before so have toes and fingers crossed. Will let you if anything crops up.

Hi Alison
Going back to the origin of the 'Golden Valley' Delahays of Herefordshire, they seem without doubt to have originated with the Norman invasion and follow up immigration of Norman families in the 11th & 12th centuries.
Evidence of Delahays all around Manor of Ewyas Lacey, Hay on Wye and the meandering river Wye ever since then.
As far as gravestones are concerned, not found any that go back into the 19th century and before.
Peterchurch Cemetery might be best bet for some ancient ones but can't find them. Similarly nothing found in Cusop or Ameley. The Delahays of Cusop and Ameley etc were of course, like most people of that age, agricultural labouring families so unlikely ordinary folk could afford monuments that would have stood the test of time.
Good luck though.

Anyone point me in the right direction to look at gravestones etc relating to the Delahayes.....which would be the best place to start? I am going to be in the area for about 3-4 days round about the 10th June. Obviously, Cusop and Almeley are high on the list.

Thanks Steve.....I must therefore presume that our Delahayes are Border people. I was told by my grandmother, from her grandmother(a Delahaye)that their origin was from France, hence the presumption. There are a lot of Huguenot Delahayes in London from appx 1600 onwards at least. Could they have spread out? In the meantime, I am planning a holiday to
search through those parish registers!

Hello Alison
No,I have never considered James as a Huguenot refugee. Seems highly unlikely. There were long well established (going back centuries), Delahay Families at nearby Llanigon, Peterchurch (Urishay), and Clifford at this time and many others in other towns of Herefordshire and adjoining Welsh villages.
The secret lies in one of these parish registers.

I had been stuck for years with the great grandson of James Delahaye, George until recently. I have an inkling that James might have been the first in the area having moved from another part of the country after the initial arrival of Huguenot refugees. Have you made any progress since you wrote the above?

Another little snippet that might help. I found out a Honor Delahay, had as a young girl, had an illegitimate son George, who died shortly after birth and was buried in Llanigon Churchyard in 1749. The father was reputed to be a William Hopkins.Llanigon is only two miles west of Cusop, over the steep hills,at least as the crows flew, and there was of course a large Delahay family living there, at that time.
Visited Llandrindod Wells records office to look at Welsh Parish Records for Llanigon but only found the above that appeared to be relevent.
Might help.

Hi Anne
So good to find someone else after the 'Holy Grail' of who was James Delahay of Cusop?
My line is also through John & Mary (married 1815). Then their son James marries Ann (Meredith) 1842 and then their son William marries Esther (Mayo) in 1869. They are my great grandparents.
As far as the Delahays of Urishay (and Peterchurch), who go back to the 1300's, are concerned, I have no doubt at all that they and the historic families of Ewyas Lacey in the Golden Valley and beyond, eg those at Longtown, Clodock,Walterstone, Alterynis,Trewyn and Preston, etc as well as those of Llanigon and Hay, are all related.
However making the direct link between James of 1750's Cusop (and thus us)is proving extremely difficult.
I am delighted you are pursuing James with your friend. I have spent many a day in Herefordshire Archives and wish you every success.
PLEASE keep me informed of ANYTHING you find and I promise to reciprocate.

Hi Steve, Great to hear from you. Having checked my family tree, our line is also William who married Jane Lloyd at Almeley in 1785. Our line of the next generation is John Delahay who married Mary Davies in 1815. Yes, I knew about Honor, who married Richard Jones at Cusop. I have found all the information so far at the Records Office in Hereford. I know a lady who is a retired archivist and she has offered to come with me and see if we can crack who were the parents of James Delahay - I will keep you posted. My Father's Aunts were of the view that we were related to the Delahays from Urishay but I have no idea if we are. My Aunt (Fathers sister) has a newspaper article with a picture of the house at Urishay. I have a scanned copy of it and the original has been handed down with the family bible. One bit of information I have about James is that he was Churchwarden at Cusop Church in 1759. Hope some of this is of interest to you. Regards, Anne Culley

Hi Anne
Hard work this tracing your family history!
Interested to know which of James and Sarah's children you go back to.
Our line is William their son born 1765.
James had a sister Honor who was also married in Cusop in 1755, so the odds are they were from a local village.
Tried most Parish records around about, eg Hay, Clyro Llanigon etc.
Appears to be a link with Honor and Llanigon and of course there was a large wealthy Delahay family in Llanigon in those days. But dificult to find any positive connection.
It would also appear that James was in the employ in Cusop in 1750 of a widow Sarah Higgins, and he must have been only about 15 then, so he came from somewhere nearby!
Let me know if I can help further or better still tell me anything you know!

Dear Steve,
I am in the same state as you and have traced the Delahay's back to the same point. My Dad's Grandmother was a Delahay girl and so we are connected along the way. Would be good to hear from you, and so hope you get this message.

Ancestor JOHN MILEWATER "esquire to the King of Clyfford in the March of Wales" appears to have been "levied etc. 400 pounds sterling of his lands and chattels in Herefordshire. Condition for his good behaviour toward the King and people". See Close Rolls~ membrane 9d~ Sept. 8~ 1452 Westminster. Seeking explanation and location of residence in Clifford. A John Milewater was Tenant-in-Chief of Stoke Edith estate~ Hereford (abt 25 miles east) granted sometime between 1417 and 1461~ and stayed in hands of descendants until sold in 1670. John (senior) born c1410 and son John were household men of the Duke of York~ the father "a mounted professional man-at arms~ recently returned from the French wars". Son was Escheator to King Henry Vl for Hereford and Welsh Marches. More infomation available. Can you assist? Thank you.

My ancestor~ Samuel IMMS~ was born in 1789~ probably in Eardisley. (The owner of a potatoes field has his name~ and he was born in Herefordshire). He married Mary Mosley...and they followed Jackson to France to launch new steel factories: so my cousins still have the name IMMS. Could anyone give information on him?? Thanks a lot!!

Hi Claude, I am trying to link Samuel Imms and Mary Mosley of France to Marie Jeanne Imms who was born in France around 1900. I have been in touch with Jean Imms of France who is a descendant of Samuel Imms & Mary Mosley, who had 4 children. I am missing the information on subsequent generations to make the connection. Marie Jeanne Imms was my mother-in-law's grandmother. Thanks. ~Karen
